How in the world did I miss that?

Look fordsucks, no one in here has a magic bullet to fix your Bull. Repairs are a matter of critical thinking skill. Hypothesize about possible causes, and eliminate them until you find out what's really going on.

I'd actually like to help, but your initial post is so rambling it's hard to know what you're talking about.

For example, re-reading it just now, I think that the lock cylinder might be bad. When you turn the key, all the warning lights should come on briefly. If they don't then the ignition switching isn't working right, which is almost always caused by a damaged lock cylinder.

So you turn the key and when the lights don't light up, the fuel pump doesn't prime, and the car won't start. Am I actually following your statement or not? It's impossible to tell. If what I described above is accurate, then your lock cylinder isn't activating the ignition switching.

My Jeep runs without gas! But not Fords.... you know why? It's because they S***!
Oh boy I have to get a life.. this is too much fun.

Ocassionally I'll do a critical read of proposed legislation and write up an executive summary, and offer wording changes. When one does a critical review, the placement of punctuation can make a significant difference in how it can be interpreted. One must look at each word, and each sentence and consider how lawyers may argue its meaning in either direction. Then I may write/offer proposed wording changes, so that the legislation can only be interpreted they way that I want it interpreted.

SO when I read posts written by people with their cell phones, without punctuation, capitalization, or even real words like "b4 u", meaning "before you" I go nuts.

Some posts are so poorly written that we'd have to spend more time guessing what they meant than it would take for them to write it again, but more clearly. This is one of those.

you got a bad alternator man. or a dead battery. if the car hasn't been taken care of (which it probably wasn't) then thats the issue. how many miles does it have?

also, where are you located?

What i meant about that gas is i had to put gas in it until it was past the 1/4 line for it to not cut out.

We have been thinking of many different reasons of why it might not work and have worked on the problem and replaced parts and when we think it is working its problem starts all over again.

All the other lights come on except the "check engine", would the lock cylinder cause only the check engine not to come on?

We didn't replace the PCM it was some other computer im not exactly sure what it is. But thanks for the info on the location.

In addition we know that you replaced your coil.

My guess is that all of the wire wiggling, and ICM tapping and putting fuel in the tank, were only coincidental to the car starting.

Intermittant problems can occur with any vehicle manufactured by any manufacturer, and traking them down can be frustrating, especially when one does not have enough personal experience or knowledge of the particular system, nor have sufficient documentation to act as a guide.

My suggestion to you at this point is to go an auto parts store and purchase either a Chilton or Haynes Manual for your year car. IF you have your choice, open them and compare which one gives you better instructions for testing and replacing your ignition switch.

I strongly suspect that a faulty ignition switch is your problem.

Here is my line of reasoning.

Your CEL bulb should go on when you turn the key to ON. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. IF it was a bad bulb, it would never go on. Could be a bad ground, or ignition switch.

When you turn the key ON you should hear the fuel pump prime. Sometimes you do, sometimes not. When NOT... it could be bad ignition switch, bad ground (but a different one from the CEL bulb), bad wiring through the inertia shut off switch and then to the pump.

So the things these have in common are the ignition switch.

Now if the ignition switch intermittently didn't get power, that would be a cause, BUT unless I misinterpreted your statements, the other dash lights always go on when you turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Therefore the ignition switch is always getting power.

The ignition switch for a '98 windstar at autozone.com lists for $25. Your's is probably about the same.

This will give you an idea of what MAY be required to replace your ignition switch. This is for a full size bronco, they may be similar.

Steering_Column

In addition it may be a broken or maladjusted actuator rod.
This thread may help.

In either case you probably won't know until you take it a part and look at it.
IF you have air bags, make sure you deactivate them before you play around in there.
