Default 92 Explorer 4.0 auto Tranny noise

My Explorer has a metallic rattling noise when in gear, Rattle starts when put into gear (D, OD, 1, 2, R) from park, ceases when accelerating or cruising, and returns at stop. Any ideas?

I'll bet it's not the transmission, but a heat shield that's come unwelded on one corner. Your engine vibrates more at lower rpm, and you don't experience any lower rpm than when you put it in gear at stop.

first thing i thought of was low torque converter fluid and it's slipping just a lil bit. If your noise increased with engine speed I would suggest the timing chain. I say this simply b/c at one time my Grand Am sounded like a diesel very badly, what happened was the tensioner for the timing chain had gone down(it was hydraulic) and it was allowing the chain to get some free play, thus smacking against the timing cover.

Default Possible rattle fix

Ok, here goes, my first post. Have a 2003 Explorer V8. Too many problems to list but perhaps do have the fix for yours. As of last week, Ford Canada has not posted this fix & its been around for a while. By the way, mine rattled just as you discribe. Anyway, fix as follows. Order in large shield for a Navigator. This is the shield that fits between ring gear & engine. Second, there is a (once again) replacement shield for the smaller inspection shield. Also order in the Navigator one. It will come with a molded rubber (two sided
) ring on the top of it. It is also 1/8 metal vs TIN.

To save yourself time & money, just try the small one first. It has just two bolts & you don't have to remove your tranny. Let me know if you need the Ford part number. I attempted for a year to get rid of the noise & this did it 100%

Now a question for you people - where can I view a engine schematic for the Explorer V-8 engine. Need to view the area where the Power Steering pump attaches to the engine block. Mine is installed on angle & want to see where some shims should be placed. Keeps ripping belts off.

Thanks
