Default Transmission Problem

I have a 1996 Ford F150 4x4 , and ever since i pulled another truck out of the mud, it seems i blew something in my transmission. It ran for about a month after that , but the transmission fluid would always leak, at least a little bit everyday till it finally over heated to the point where it wont go anywhere. Was wondering what the problem would be and if i could just buy a rebuild kit and rebuild everything in the tranny or just find a new one? Anyone have ideas of whats wrong/ what i should do? Thanks a lot.

Lubegard additives,Lubegard transmission fluid additives
They have all the parts you would need and the manuals! For auto trannies I always
pull at least a half quart to full quart of trans fluid out every motor oil change! Get a mity vac vacuum pump and a hose as long as the dip stick, And put a zip ty at the top
so it won't go in any further. It keeps fresh fluid and additive package in the trans and
sure it seems like extra work but weigh that against the cost of a rebuild! That lube guard additive on the link is the only one I would use and it really does work unlike some of the others that are around. What probably happened is your fluid was close to being shot and the added stress from pulling him out burnt up all your additive package(friction modifier, etc) and the fluid couldn't do it's job and lead to a burnt clutch band. For four
wheeling a trans temp gauge will save you from this happening again, You can't imagine how much the temp rises just sitting at a stop light with it in gear, Not to mention while off roading and the tc slipping a bunch, add the slow speeds and high motor temps and
the fluid really takes the abuse.

If you have intermittant running problems or a flat spot/buck/dying/cutting out while accelerating.
Do your self a favor and try some dedicated gas
line dryer, Double or even triple dose it, It's cheaper
then throwing parts at a problem that doesn't throw
codes!!

well now i family friend took the truck and has tried 2 transmissions into it which both failed but he still has the one I had in it before. how much would a tranny rebuild run me if i took it to a professional tranny shop instead of doing it myself? I work all the time so time to do it is an issue. thanks for your help

I'm not clear on whether or not you were topping it off. If you weren't the trans fluid starvation itself probably finished it off. Either way, you're in need of a replacement.

The transmission is not complicated to replace. If you're mechanically inclined and have a space to work, you could do the job yourself with some help.

If you go to a transmission shop, they'll charge you 2 to 4 times as much as you'll pay for a junkyard transmission. Look around for a good used one with low miles. Try to find one from a truck that hasn't been beat to death. It's much better to get one from a wrecked truck that belonged to a private owner than it is to get one out of a truck that a contractor used and abused.

You posted this as I was typing my previous post.

Transmission rebuild prices vary widely depending on what market you're in. When I lived in an economically depressed rural area, I got a TH700R4 rebuilt for $1200 at AAMCO. When I moved here to the DC area, the local AAMCO shop told me that they would have charged well more than double that amount.

well when it first started leaking i checked to see how much fluid was in and there wasnt much at all. so i went up to auto zone bought fluid and just always had to keep filling it up because it kept leaking it all out. then it started shifting hard. it would go into neautral it seemed till about 2500 RPM then jump back in gear. when i went to fill it up it started smoking soon as i put the fluid in . then driving it back home it went completly out so i guess i burnt up a bunch of internal parts . not exactly sure.

I'm sure your existing transmission is smoked, but I don't understand why your friend couldn't get one of the other ones to work. Either both of the ones he had were bad, or he was installing them incorrectly.

I think both of them were bad . im gonna give him a call tomorow and see whats up. If he tries another one and it doesnt work im going to just tow the truck back to my house and go to a junkyard near here and pick out one and then maybe slowly but surely make time to put it in myself. If i bought one from a junkyard and then took it to a Tranny place would they put it in any cheaper than the cost to rebuild one? If i give them one to put in? just trying to figure out about how much money all this is gonna run me if i dont ever have time to do it myself. usually all problems with it I fix myself but i know this is different than the other problems i fix on it- a little more time consuming. I do appreciate all your help

The only way to know is ask. Ask them to give you a price for removal and reinstallation of a transmission and then ask them to give you a price for rebuilding yours.

The one thing to think about is the way junkyard warranties work. If it has a warranty, and usually they'll give you a short one, they'll just give you another transmission if the one you got the first time is bad. If you pay someone to do the swap, and if the first one is bad, you'll have to pay to have the R&R done again, or do it yourself the second time. Am I making any sense?
