Question to rebuild or not to rebuild

This is wrt my '94 Ranger 2.3 L SOHC mt 2wd

Fried the engine due to a bad water pump.

Replaced the pump and thermostat but it won't start.

Spark OK, timing OK, fuel OK, but compression is terrible: Dry compression: 60, 53, 30, 125.

I expect things won't improve much whe I do the wet compression test because this engine has 205,000 miles on it.

So I think I'll be either rebuilding it (machine shops doing the precision boring and me the reassembly or I'll be getting a Jasper or whatever engine.

The latter is interesting because there's a DOHC available.

What I don't kjnow is the price of the DOHC and whether it is a drop-in or a project.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

- Bill

If you are going to put a different engine in it, you will need the entire engine wiring harness and computer.

I just want to make sure, You did hold the throttle open while doing the comp test?
How long has the motor sat before you did the comp test? IF it has sat for a week
or two the oil in the oil rings has leaked away and they work together to help seal the
pistons, so throw some oil in there and try again. If the numbers go way up but are still
low you may be able to get by with a honing and new rings!! may even be able to get
away with doing it right in the engine bay.
How long did you run it with no water flow?

If you have intermittant running problems or a flat spot/buck/dying/cutting out while accelerating.
Do your self a favor and try some dedicated gas
line dryer, Double or even triple dose it, It's cheaper
then throwing parts at a problem that doesn't throw
codes!!

Thanks for replying.

I did the comp test 36 hr after it had last run.

I think there was nominal oil on the rings/cylinder walls as the oil light went out.

Yes, the throttle was locked open during the test.

The difference between the numbers is the scary part.

I'm going to do a wet compression test next: An ounce or two of oil in the spark plug hole just before testing that cylinder. That should tell me how much bad ring(s) are contributing to the problem.

Then I'll pull the head and see what's inside.

Thanks again and please stay tuned.
