Question Need help figuring out the size of inline 6

There's a motor sitting in my shed from the home's previous owner. I have a chance to sell it and get it out of here, but the buyer wants to know the size. Lost contact w/previous owner, so can't ask him. It's an inline 6 cyl, he said came out of a Mustang, don't know the year. Is there a way I can determine the size and what it came out of based on the serial numbers stamped on the parts? Or should there be a VIN on the motor? I'm out of my depth here. Any advice would be appreciated.

There should be some stamping numbers on it someplace. Look on the head as well that may help. It could be a 170 or 200 or maybe a 250.

Default Found some numbers

Okay. The only numbers I could find were on 2 bars on the side of the valve cover opposite the spark plugs.

Upper bar: C3DE-9430 A
4K23

Lower bar: C5DE-6090 A
4k21

Even with my lack of correct terminology, could these numbers provide a clue for me?

Thanks for your help.

Upper bar is a fuel system number, like and intake manifold or carb. The lower line tells me it is a 1965 170 or 200 CID engine. To narrow it down more will need a block casting number.

Default Another number

Wow, that really narrows it down. I inspected it with the flashlight and finally found the number 4K22 on what I think is the block, right above the oil pan (I think it's the oil pan, bolted on the bottom) on the spark plug side. I didn't see another "C" number like was on the bars. Does that help?

Also, any advice as to a fair price? It's very dirty, been sitting for years, and the internal condition is unknown.

Thanks for all your help so far!

That number tells us it was built in 1964 on October 22nd. There should be a number similar to the head casting number on there some place.

Eureka! After digging through the caked-on gunk I found what I think is the elusive number: C5DE 6015-H . The final 5 may be an S, but I don't think so.

That is a 170 ci inline 6. It came in falcons and mustangs in the mid 60s. Try cleaning it up since it is out of the car. Could get you some more money.

The mystery engine now has an identity. Thanks so much, guys! I emailed the guy pictures and he never got back with me, so maybe cleaning it up wouldn't be such a bad idea. I'll let you know what happens!
