I have a 1996 6cyl 4x4 Ford Explorer XLT with 190K miles. Last week while accelerating from a stop, I felt and heard a large knock followed by a whirring, scraping sound and a complete lack of power to the wheels. When I stepped on the gas the scraping sound was more pronounced. I coasted to a stop and turned the engine off.
When I try to start the car it sounds as if the starter motor is engaging the flywheel but it appears the engine is not turning over because the pulleys at the front are not turning. I pulled the starter motor and did not see any problem with it or the flywheel.
About 1 week before this happened my son was driving the car and he said he felt vibrations and the Overdrive Off light lit on the dashboard.
