Exclamation smog check questions

i am really frustrated here, do i need a stupid ASM test? they say that my bald tires will slip on the dyno tester, i say, don't do it then... but they need it anyways for some reason.

this is my first car, my dad always pops up with these deals, "get it registered and insured and i'll get you new tires"

well, problem is to get the tires i must get it registered, to get it registered i need it smogged, to get it smogged i need tires to pass the dyno test. My area code is 94533, anyone know a place nearby that does the test without the dyno? this car has plenty of horse power, why do they need to test that?

further more, its running now, so thanks to all of you who helped before. the problem was the computer.

Your car is registered in an "enhanced" smog area. That's why you need to have the dynomometer involvement. Emission readings are taken front the exhaust pipe at 15 and 25 mph, and that is why the need for the dyno. As far as the bald tires go, check around at different smog check locations, you will probably find one who will perform the test.

I used to do emission tests on a dyno before I moved to Arizona. They are right. The first part of the test is a fast visual safety inspection. If tires are bald or anything involved with the dyno (front wheel drive steering parts) it is unsafe to run it on the dyno. The test is an IM240 that involves running at varying speeds up to 40MPH. It has nothing to do with how much horsepower you have.
