Angry Squeak

2003 Taurus, squeaking coming from somewhere under the hood, not a constant squeal, but distinct squeaks. I assumed it was the serpentine belt, checked tension, good there, tried belt dressing still squeaked afterwards and still does, friend ford mechanic said maybe alternator bearings, water pump going out, or power steering pump going out... have had a little trouble with power steering in the past sitting at idle and no benefit from power steering almost impossible to turn wheel but it wasn't all the time, checked fluid and it was fine this still happens once in a while but isn't a big deal, i can deal with hard steering once in a while as long as it's not damaging anything else... just want to know what that stupid squeaking is and how to fix it. im sure it's something stupid that i should probably have already checked, but for the life of me i cant figure it out... don't wanna go out and spend a few hundred on all the parts it could be and find out that i was totally wrong and wasted the money. i also dont wanna take it to a mechanic as i know whatever it is i can fix it, just need to know what it is.

Could be the idler or tensioner pulleys for the serpintine (drive) belt. They will cause a distinct squeal. And they are not too expensive & realtively easy to replace.

Would that produce a constant squeal, or distinct repetive squeaks?

Intermittent squeaks are not likely from tensioner, alternator, water pump, etc. All tend to have more of a persistent squeal.

As for your PS problem, it will get worse before it gets better. Sounds like dirt in the system. Draining and replacing the fluid may help.

Would that cause my squeak or just the ps problems? I'm not worried about the ps as long as it doesn't squeak, it's not damaging anything as long as the pump doesn't lock up or something.

Well not to worry about the squeak... it went away. I think whatever was squeaking wore out or something. No adverse problems as of yet.

Use a long screwdriver or dowel to pinpoint engine noises. If you go around and listen to the various rotating parts(be careful and hold the screwdriver tight but be ready to throw your hand up if it happpens to get grabbed) The noise is probably still there but may have turned into a low rumble/grinding/low frequency noice that may not be as noticeable but you will be able to hear it. Just take note of the different noises and compare them at alater date or if the squeal comes back!

If you have intermittant running problems or a flat spot/buck/dying/cutting out while accelerating.
Do your self a favor and try some dedicated gas
line dryer, Double or even triple dose it, It's cheaper
then throwing parts at a problem that doesn't throw
codes!!

Clutch on the AC compressor? Remember the compressor will kick on when the defrost is on.
