Default zx2 top end knocking noise

Bought a 00 zx2 w/bad head gasket. Completed the job and it makes some more noise than I can bear. I don't know if it made the noise before I bought it or not. Almost sounds like it could be a rod knock but it is not. Its coming from the top end. It appears to be and it sounds like the exhaust cam is rattling. I turned the motor over by hand @ 30-40 times to insure oil to the top end. Each time it rotated you could see the exhaust cam 'jump' and 'click' noise. The more I turned it the less noisy it was. Figured it was 'OK' I proceed and got it running. Sounds bad. Get the rpm's up and the noise almost goes away. But at an idle its taping pretty good. I was thinking the exhaust cam gear is malfunctioning. That gear is almost $300 from the dealer so I don't want to toss on a new one if it won't fix it.
Otherwise, Car runs good, and strong. Check engine light is not on, No codes and no pending codes.

Any hints or recomendations.
