Default P0455 code Evap emission control system Leak (Large) what symptoms?

I got a P0455 code Evap emission control system Leak (Large)

Other than checking to make sure the gas cap was on I haven't done anything yet, so don't go crazy with detailed explanations. If I get stuck, I'll let you know.

On Thursday, I plan to have my trans serviced on my '98 3.8 windstar. 133,000 miles, so while the van is up on the lift, I'll take a look at the hoses, and connections, from the gas tank forward.

Recently I noticed that the trans did not seem to be acting quite properly, maybe shifting a little firmly, and perhaps stuttering in and out of overdrive, just ocassionally. I was thinking that it was about 15-20,000 miles overdue for a service, and planned to get it done soon, but this made me make an appointment for Thurs.

Today, the shifting was a bit more pronounced, and I am hoping that I didn't wait too long. Also the CEL came on. So when I got home, I pulled codes, not only did I get the P0455 code, but a P0302 missfire on Cyl #2.

Of course, the cyl #2 is almost as difficult to get to as Cyl #1, so I am not happy with that missfire code! C4,5,or 6, would have been much better Oh yeah.. murphy's law strikes again!

So what it comes down to, is that I may have been interpreting weak firing of cyl 2, with an ocassional actual missfire as a trans issue.

So here's the plan. I'll have the trans serviced, and look for broken hoses to the Evap emission control system.

Weather and time permitting I'll check to make sure that wire to cyl 2 is tightly connected to both the plug, and the coil pack, and if tight pull the cowel, and the plug, and check the coil pack.

gotta run

Joe you can get that evap code from a plugged vent hose too. there was a TSB way back in the day dealing with it. Make sure no spiders have made a web in the vent hoses. Can't remember the number but if you have access to alldata you may be able to find it.

Thanks canuck623,
You're the best!

I am member of the Community Emergency Response Team, and we had a call out. a 70 y/o man missing, last seen near a lake. Thank God, he was found safe by time I responded. That was the cause of the ... gatta run.

Thanks for the tip. I can blow out the lines with compressed air if I don't find an obvious leak.
Thanks again!
joe

There also is a valve on the charcoal canister that opens and closes. I had one go bad on my truck and caused a large leak in the EVAP system. Kinda spendy plastic piece ....I think it was like $50.00 for cheep looking little part.

ISSUE
The Malfunction Illumination Lamp (MIL) may be illuminated on some vehicles. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0455/1450/1452/1455 will be stored in memory. This may be caused by an obstruction in the evaporative emissions system vent line and/or loss of seal integrity due to loose/unseated fuel cap.

ACTION
Remove the vent line obstruction (if needed), install a vent filter and dust filter box, replace the canister vent valve, and reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the latest calibration level. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Make sure the fuel filler cap is properly seated.

2. Clear the vent line by rolling a ball bearing through the hose.

3. Install the Fuel Vapor Kit (F88Z-9B328-AA) in area of fuel filler cap. Refer to the instructions within the kit.

4. Install the Dust Filter Box Kit (XF2Z-9B328-BA). Refer to the instructions within the kit.

5. Replace the Canister Vent Valve (CVV) Assembly (F78Z-9F945-CA). Refer to the 1998 Windstar Service Manual, Group 03, for procedure.

6. Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration level (for vehicles equipped with 3.8L engine only).
