Default painting over chrome

I want to change the exterior trim from chrome to black. I have not been able to find new trim in black. Is there any treatment I can do to the chrome? Or am I gonna Have to sand down to bare metal?

I built the grille gaurd for my F-150 and used chrome parts. Make sure it is sanded down very well or else the paint won't stick. I did a bad job sanding and the paint is already flaking off.

You do not need to remove all of the chrome. You do need to scuff it and use a liquid cleaner and metal prep, sold at all auto paint stores.

Sandblasting will work, but may etch the surface too much. Then you would need 1 or more coats of primer filler and multiple sandings to get it back to a smooth enough finish for paint.
