1) The speedometer needle is jumpy, but settles down once stable cruising speed is reached. Could it be the cable or something needing lube?
2) The gas gauge only goes to 3/4 full. Could that be a float problem? If so, is that easy to access for replacement?

Ok , for those of you who dont know , I have a 65 galaxie . I put a 428 C6ME block into it last year and have been enjoying it with the automatic until I got the parts to put in the 4 speed. I got a HEH-R close ratio toploader for the tranny these came in 65 galaxies behind the 427 . they were large input and 28 spline output. I got an 11.5 clutch , seeing the 11 wouldnt fit the large input . I got the correct C5AA-6394-a bellhousing that was correct for the 65-67 galaixes . I was told these origonally had 11 clutches , but an 11.5 would fit . and I got an aftermarket flywheel from ebay (250323484037 item is identical to what I bought) that is externally ballanced and is 184 teeth. It is for a 428 FE motor. THe problem I have is , everything bolted up , but when I tried to bolt the starter up , the teeth were alreay engaged to flywheel, as if though the flywheel was wrong for the application or I needed some sort of spacer to let starter disengage . I burned one starter up ,because once the engine started it couldnt retract , there was no where to go . what did I do wrong? Should I get a flywheel for a 427 seeing that the transmission is for a 427 ? My 428 is externally ballanced. THe flywheel is 15.5 in diameter. is the flywheel incorrect for my application ? do I need a different bellhousing because I have a 428 from a 68 in there? the bellhousings from 68 behind cobrajets were 11.5 clutches. that make any difference? I thought all FEs had the same external dimensions . Im very frustrated and now Im gonig to need to tear the whole thing down it looks like . is there a spacer with the starter I need to get ? please help if you can . THis has been a real pain in the ass. thank you for all the help you can give .

Hi all,

I am new to your forum. I am also the new owner of a '65 Galaxie 500 LTD coupe with 70,000 original miles. I am doing a mild refreshing/restoration -- keeping her original -- but I want to replace the pizza cutter 15x5" rims. (Yes, I'll save the originals!) I am thinking of doing a new set of Torq Thrust Ds in 15x7" (3 3/4" backspace) to maintain that vintage look, but I need some help in choosing a tire size that will look aggressive and yet fit without clearance problems. Can I do 255/60x15s in the rear? 275/60x15s? And what size will work on the front??:confused5: Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks much...

Ok guys, thanks for alot of feedback from my previous post. I have found a Ford FE Block at the junkyard. It is sitting in a 65 ford 250 custom truck. It is probably not the original engine. The junkyard claims it is a 390. But there is no 352 casting on the drivers side of the the block. The cylinder heads read C6AE-U. I thought all Ford Fe motors have the 352 stamp on the driverside of the block. But i scraped all the oil residue and i cant find one on the drivers side of the block. Another interesting thing is that the Oil Filter is mounted in a sideways position. Usually they are mounted in a vertical postion down by the fuel filter. This one is mounted by the fuel filter but in a horizontal position. Any ideas guys?

The junkyard said it was a 390 but there was no 352 castings. How do you tell the difference of a 352 vs 390 vs 428. Also on the f385 series the 429vs 460. Any tricks out there. Help

I recently started my first "restoration" on a 64 ford galaxie and I was able to get the motor running good but now I'm looking to take the interior door panel off. I took out the visible screws and when I pry lightly at the bottom, the bottom part of the panel seems to come free but the rest of it doesn't.

Do the two handles for the main windows and the smaller window need to be removed as well? If so, how do these handle's come off as I haven't been able to find a way to remove them.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated as I am dumbfounded that I can't get this door panel off!

My mechanic called today to say that one of the cylinders is burning oil. I had brought the car in with white smoke coming out of right tailpipe after a 100 mile cruise.

Engine is a fresh upper rebuild with 800 miles, done just before I bought the car. There was no smoke in the beginning. Mechanic said that lower engine looks pristine.

Anyone care to diagnose?
