Hi guys, glad to be here. I might even know some of you guys from other forums. :)

I recently purchased a 1989 Thunderbird LX that has the factory stereo installed (AM/FM/Cassette, non-JBL). I have zero radio reception and when I play cassettes (which is all the time without radio working) I have to turn it up all the way to only hear about half volume. I pulled the stereo out today and reconnected everything and the same problem is occurring. Im thinking that somewhere the antenna cable is screwed up or came loose from the antenna, and that my premium stereo amplifier isnt working as the cause of my volume problem.

Any suggestions guys? Where can I find the integrated amplifier to check it out and/or replace it?

Thanks!

I own a 1994 ford t- bird LX. It has the 4.6 V8, I have had my care for about two years, and have been happy till now. I was driving home from work one day, and it just died. I thought maybe i was out of gas so i filled it up... and you can guess. That was not the issue. So i sat there trying to start it, and it would turn over great but die as soon as i let go of the key. So i waited a while longer, and it started, and ran for a while longer. It would run then start missing, drop rpms, and stall if i pushed on the gas. I could keep it running longer if i kept just a little pressure on the gas peddle. So at first i thought it was the gas, or fuel delivery system, but that seems to be fine. I did however change the fuel filter. I Have now replaced the Air flow sensor, Crankshaft position sensor, fuel filter, spark plugs, coil packs, and had the ignition control module tested(tested good... even after repeated testing). Also the oil pressure seems to drop just before and during the shutdowns. It also gives off a weird smell when its missing during the time before it shuts down. What else can i do to get this car fixed????? :confused5:

Hey guys,

my friend from Ukraine owns an imported (from USA) Thunderbird. Its a 95 model, has 3.8L engine and is LX. Basically my friend wants to remove the speed limiter so that it would not top out around 110mph. Also he wants to tune the automatic transmission on it for a more aggressive shifting. And since he will be putting a full exhaust system and a cold air intake, he would like to tune the ECU for some extra fuel to compensate for the more flowing air.

Thanks alot guys. I would really like to help him out, and i dont know anything about Thunderbirds (im better with bike;-))

I'm ba-a-a-a-a-ack. Hee-hee. How is everyone?

Okay, so I finally took my car in to a new mechanic (at an electrical shop) a couple of weeks ago for the sputtering and cutting out issues I was having with it, and his shop supposedly proceeded to take apart or check every possibility, including dropping the tank to check the fuel pump. The car is responding beautifully so far since I got it back, with the exception that the gas pedal feels harder than it did before I took it in. A very minor thing, I grant you, but noticeable nonetheless. He determined it was the main programmer (computer) and some camshaft sensor, and at this point I'm beginning to agree. Not only has it not stalled or hesitated, but the "hard hiccup" the tranny would experience every once in a while has not resurfaced -- not once. I dunno, it's been a week without any of the previous symptoms, so I am crossing my fingers and hope it continues working flawlessly. We will see.

Okay, just some general questions:

1) How does one replace the spark plugs in these things? I'd like to give it new plugs(80,000miles), but these things (boots) just don't pull off easily. Does it require a special tool?

2) My turn signals have acted up since I got the car back. I returned it to the shop and they said that this problem is not tied to any work they did on the vehicle (coincidence?). Sometimes I flip it to make a right turn and it responds with a fast pace clip without any signals showing in the dash. I put it back in the center position, try it again, and it works okay. Does this sound like the flasher problem or a contact point missing somewhere, etc? Where is the turn signal flasher in these things? On older models it stuck out like a sore thumb on the fuse box under the steering wheel column. Where is it on this vehicle? What's it look like?

3) My T-bird's remote does not seem to have a very long range. On my F-150 I can be at quite a distance (150ft or so) to set it on or off, but on this car it's limited it seems to about a "40" foot range. Is this the remote's battery, the remote's factory limit ... what?

4) How can I increase the distance of my headlamps? Is there a particular bulb out there that will do it, and what's it called? It just seems when I'm next to other vehicles while night driving, that I require my high beams to match their normal headlamp beam distance.

Thank you all for all your previous help and suggestions. :)

Hi,

I'm trying to fix my mom's 1995 Tbird.

It is sometimes hard to start. Turns, but does not always catch (hot, and cold).

Is has stalled at red lights a few times.

It stumbles pretty bad on a hard acceleration. Almost sounds like it is going to stall, but then catches up and gets up to RPM it should be at.

It's OBD1, and had Engine Light on for a while. (engine light has been off since I cleaned the battery posts).

I read the OBD1 codes, and saw:
117 - ECT Sensor is/was low or grounded
217 - Primary circuit failure - ignition coil 3
621 - Solenoid/circuit failure - shift1 solenoid.

I cleaned the battery posts and cables. Battery is newer, and gives over 12 volts on meter when I test the battery.

I read fuel pressure. It only gets to about 30 psi on first fuel pump priming, but gets to 40 psi on the second priming.

I put in new spark plugs. The old plugs actually did not look bad for 60,000 miles on them, and they sparked pretty good when I grounded them to the valve covers while cranking the engine.

So, what should I test next?

Is the initial low fuel pressure a cause for the hard starting?

Would low fuel pressure possibly explain the stumble on acceleration?

Does the fuel pump even run while the car is driving, or only during start up?

How can OBD give 217, ignition coil 3 failure? (There are no individual coils packs on this car)

Oh, it's a 3.8L v6. It has a distributor cap and is fuel injected, and has about 60,000 miles on it.

I suspect more of a fuel problem than spark problem at this point. But I'm not sure of that.

I was thinking if it is fuel, it could be fuel pump, fuel filter, FPR, or something else?

thanks for any help,
matt

Hello I am new to the forums but a long time T-Bird owner. My problem is a bit complex so I will just go into it. My 1994 T-Bird is leaking brake fluid bad, I traced it to the lines coming from the ABS hydraulic unit to where the battery is mounted. So I took the hydraulic unit out and took the brake lines off of it. The problem is that the block that mounts by the battery, I can not get the brake lines off of that block. I believe it is a 11 mm wrench but I have rounded 3 nuts already. My question is offer that block with fittings or am I going to have to figure something else out?

Secondly when bleeding these brakes is there a special tool I need to plug into the ABS? If yes what is it?

Thanks in advance and if you need a picture let me know I can get it up here tomorrow to show you what I'm talking about.
