Ok here goes I have an 01 windstar and I was getting a misfire in 4 I changed the plugs and wires and I had the codes cleared. Seemed to help . Then all a sudden I have rattle noise :frown2: when I am driving I dont hear it when it is idleing or when engine is under load only when just cruising down highway or through town dont matter what speed also still notice miss/cutout when I am at higher speeds around 65/70 especially when pulling up a hill. I still am getting same gas mileage and everything. :out: Not sure what it could be. I had codes ran again and all it said was i think 0154 bad O2 sensor bank 4 and lean. Got 210000 on it. I have found this site really helpful with other issues I have had just by reading the threads I have been able to find answers. This one I havent found any so I decided to post my own thread I hope someone can help use the van for work so I need it fixed asap. Like I said still runs good idles good and drives good just a rattle when I drive an dcuts out misses at higher speeds. :out:

Thanks New member today

Keeping my Transmission Alive 2000 SEL 160k Miles

I just read through the excellent thread...

I just read through the excellent thread http://www.ford-forums.com/ford-wind...t=transmission started by jsge090. I have 160K miles on the original transmission and would love to keep it going as long as possible, but I hear the clock ticking. I have done just about everything on a vehicle, but never really tore into a automatic transmission. Have to admit, after looking at jsge090's thread it looked a little fun....but I'll wait.lol
So this got me thinking about what I can do to prevent a catastrophic failure and the dreaded "replace the tranny for $boocoo" situation. I have to admit, although I believe I do a good job on all other areas of my vehicles, but trasnmission?...maybe I could do more?
So my question are these:
- What can I do now that may give me more life on my tranny. I know fluid change and filter, but are there other things that any of you do? ( even if they are a little work)...as it would be worth it, in my view.
- I believe I have a "flush"? done at one point...long time ago. Are these worth it? could they cause more problems if not done correctly?
- What else can I do?

I have a 98 Windstar with the 3.8 ltr motor. It's been missing and chugging occasionally. I pulled the codes and I got a P0301 and a P0304 only. I've read many of these threads and posts and this is what I've done so far as far as trouble shooting.

1.Checked coil pack using Fluke 87 DVM
A. Each lead from the coil pack to the 12V lead read 000.8 ohms. All read the same.
B. From each pair of posts they read 13.76 ohms. All read the same.
2. Checked for spark coming from the wire to the sparkplugs.
A.removed each wire at the plugs and let it sit next to the bare metal.
B. Only removed the wires for cylinders 1 and 4.
3. Checked ticks from fuel injectors.
A. Realizing this is only speculative, I listened with a long rod sitting on the side of each fuel injector. I could only listen to numbers 1, 4,5,6. I did not remove the plenum and could not get to injectors 2 and 3.
B. I could hear a steady tick sound at each injector although I must admit the tick was louder on injectors 5 & 6. Not sure as to why.
C. I did not have a noid light.
4. Checked engine vacuum using a vacuum guage.
A. Pulled the power booster vacuum hose off of the power booser fitting and put my guage there to see what kind of vacuum I had.
B. Vacuum was steady at 17 inhg. until I gave it some gas and then the vacuum almost was null (which I think is what it should have been) I went to the site BroncoJoe19 recommended for using a vacuum guage.

I could not figure anything else out. I was hoping to get answers from all of you gurus of Fords.

I got some 5 spoke 16" aluminum wheels from a 2000 Taurus and put new Bridgestone Potenza directional tires on (size 216/60R16). I think they look great! Can't wait to drive around them! (see first pic)

But sadly, with winter coming, it was time to put on my winter tires... so I put on the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice tires (also size 215/60R16) that my dad gave me when recently sold his 2001 Taurus. I got a set of OEM 16" Ford Fusion plastic wheel covers for them. Dresses it up quite nicely if you ask me! (see second pic)

Much nicer than the stock and bare 15" black steelies that came with the van with some horrid mismatched and unbalanced Goodyear tires. I didn't even notice the original tires had not been balanced until I took them off. What a difference in the quality of the ride now! (see third pic)

Windstar stalled while driving

I have been noticing for the last 2-3 weeks a slight stumble to my 2003 ford windstar while at idle. At higher speeds the vehicle is fine but when I...

I have been noticing for the last 2-3 weeks a slight stumble to my 2003 ford windstar while at idle. At higher speeds the vehicle is fine but when I come to a complete stop, you can sort of feel the car vibrate then stop then vibrate and stop as if it almost wants to stall out.

While driving today, I went to pull into a fuel station from doing 90kmh to a speed of aboput 15kmh and the vehicle stalled right out but started back up with no problems.

I put the OBDII reader on the vehicle and I am not receiving any fault codes but am receiving pending codes. Basically this means that the vehicle has not yet finished it's self diagnostic but obviously we have a problem.

The code reader I have will inform which codes have not yet been set and the culprits seem to be the following

Catalyst Monitor
Evaporative System Monitor
Oxygen Sensor Monitor
Oxygen Sensor Heater Monitor
EGR Monitor

Now I know in some of my older vehicles when the EGR fails it will trigger hesitations and stumbling issues at idle as well as potentially cause the vehicle to stall.

The EGR on my van appears to be vacuum controlled and I have no idea how to test this. I pulled the vacuum line and it appears to have slight suction.

With the above reference possibilities, what would be the best plan of attack at this point? I am not receiving any codes therefore cannot exactly diagnose the problem. Check engine light is not even on but yet the vehicle has already stalled once and continues to feel as if it wants to stall.

I do not want to start replacing parts unless properly tested and I am not about to take this into a mechanic just yet as I like to tackle these issues myself along with this forums help.

Thank you in advance.....

New to the forums, after extensive searching I just have a question about the EPC (electonic pressure control) on my 03 Windstar. I was wondering if this is located in the same area as on 1996 winstar and if anyone has any tips on the best way to replace this part. My fiance is DIYer and would like to get the car running asap for me. Seems to be located in the tranmission by te transaxle. So if anyone has any info or tips for replacing this part we would greatly appreciate it. TY in advance to any answers or tips

My wife and I own a 2001 Windstar LX with 100k miles on it, and at about 98k miles, the transmission started making bad shifting decisions. It's still making poor decisions (it'll shift up and down when not necessary on occasion), but now it shudders before going into reverse and second gears as I start to accelerate.

We bought the vehicle used at 48k miles in '04, and I think the engine light came on sometime in 2005, and despite our best efforts (and a good deal of money) at getting it off permanently, it's been on continuously since.

I'm not here to complain about the van as it's done what we wanted it to do despite the light, and it took a dead deer laying in my lane at 60+ mph about two weeks ago with zero damage...it smells like a venison barbecue now when it heats up, but that old girl went over that deer like a champ. I'd like to see an Odyssey do that.

Anyway, we just bought an '05 Freestyle to replace the van, and I plan on selling the Windstar locally. I plan on disclosing what I know about the van and short of taking it to the local dealership to find out, I'm curious to know if the above description of the shifting and shuddering sounds like it's a problem with the torque converter or the transmission or both. I know squat about either, so I'm at a loss here.

Okay, I've looked everywhere for some insight on this but found none.

2001 Windstar, rebuilt tranny with 20K on it. Over the past few weeks (probably longer), I've noticed there is almost no delineation between neutral and drive when I shift into gear. There just seems to be an "area" that I shift into and then have to make sure I'm on the right side of that area. There's no click in between them anymore.

Also, if it's not far enough right, the van seems like it shifts into neutral for a second when it shifts from 1st to 2nd and then 2nd to 3rd. Basically it hangs for a seconds and the RPMs go up about a grand. If I've got it pulled far enough over towards drive it seems to shift fine.

Any ideas?
