Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction. Available with V6 or V8 power, the Explorer competes against the TrailBlazer, Grand Cherokee, 4Runner, and Pathfinder. Explorer was completely redesigned in 2006 and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation.

Recently, I was driving and heard a loud bang and then I heard and felt grinding of the rear brakes. I took the left rear wheel and rotor off to find all the brake kit - springs and all broken and the shoes worn down. I very rarely used the Emergency brake and I am wondering if by not using the Emergency brake that could cause corrosion, rust etc... and cause the spring to snap? I tried to do the repair myself but unable to stretch the spring into place and putting the little pins into place was a pain in the butt. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am getting a small Vibration or grumble as it were felt through the steering and accelerator pedal between 2300 and 2600 rpm. It doesn't seem to matter what gear I'm in at the time or how fast I'm moving so I don't think it would be Tires or Tranny. Could it be my exhaust system?
I have a 98 XL 4.0 OHV AUTO4x4.
Has anyone had this issue and solved it; or any suggestions?:confused5:

I have a 94 Explorer with an auto transmission issue. Everything works correctly except switching from 1st to 2nd. No clunking or odd noises have ever been evident nor are there any fluid leaks. The only way to switch from 1st to 2nd is to accelerate the RPM's to around 2700-3k, take my foot completely off the gas for a brief moment and it will switch gears. Rapid acceleration from 30-35 will result in kick down to 1st. Once past 35, it will not kick back down to 1st. No other gear changes are effected. If I try running down the road at around 25 MPH or less, it will always kick back down to 1st when any acceleration is applied and the whole foot/accelerator problem has to be repeated. I have replaced the filter and fluid, and replaced the vacuum modulator. My next guess would be clutch bands, but not sure where the adjustment would be located. If anyone has any other ideas, I would be most interested in hearing them.

Hi! I'm new to the forum and am having a problem with my 96 Explorer. It starts fine when cold. However, when warm, it cranks fine but won't start until it cools down. Fuel filter has been changed, plenty of pressure at rail. When turning key to first click, can hear pump charging rail.It seems if I hold the accellerator to floor and pump throttle quickly, it will start most times after sitting for a half hour or so. This is my wife's car and she is frustrated that I have to go to her and it usually starts after doing what I said earlier. Any HELP would be appreciated!

Well, long story short my wife and I own a 2001 escape and a 2002 explorer. She is wanting to purchase a car because the suv thing just isn't her. That's fine by me I just want her happy. This has led to a tough decision for me. I live in West Virginia and our winters while not horrible with deep snow we get these little dustings of ice to 5 inch snows. Our road crews are horrible and dont know the meaning of salting before it gets bad so roads stay icy and slick. I travel around 30 mins on the interstate to take my child to his grandmas. Which vehicle do you recomend as the best winter driver. The explorer with its rear wheel drive to 4wd or the escape with the front wheel drive but car like handiling and lockable 4wd switch on the dash. I would be purchasing winter tires for which ever one I kept. Thanks in advance.

I had a problem everytime I engaged the 4x4 on my 96 explorer. It would bind everytime I turned, reversed, and slight bind in foward. Decided to check t-case fluid and found alot of metal pieces/shavings. So, I decided to replace the T-case. Now it works great, no binding noise that is. But, it is doing the same that the previous T-case was doing. It will engage into 4-high auto but NOT into 4-low and yes I hear the module clicking when trying to go into 4low. When I switch it back to 2WD it disengages the 4x4 BUTthe shaft to the front DIFF. stays engaged. According to a Ford machanic and a few others that work on cars, it is NOT supose to turn while in 2wd. Any advice out there on how to fix this problem.
Thanks
