Five HundredFord Five Hundred looks like just another conservatively styled family sedan. But peel away the Passat-like sheet metal and you will find a well engineered, highly competent chassis, much of it lifted from the Ford-owned Volvo S80. The Five Hundred sedan will be sharing this new Volvo-derived platform with the Ford Freestyle untapped markets.
When I saw an article about the new Dodge Magnum police car beating the Crown Vic and Impala, I couldn't help but wonder why ford still uses the huge Crown Vic platform. Ford could continue it's police heritage in the 500. It's priced a little lower, has AWD, a competent future 3.5(or maybe 4.6 PI package?), much safer car that could put a Magnum in it's place with the right engine. Not to mention would be cheaper to operate than a Crown Vic. Why is ford dropping the ball? Someone hit the ford guys in the head with the smart stick eh???
Probably because it's a full frame, stronger built car than the GM,Mopar or 500.Rear drive always wins over the cops for durability.500 cheaper to operate??Most Crown vics get well over 20 mpg(about the same as our awd freestyle,a 500 wagon)and are plenty faster than the 500.I like the 500,but they're gonna have to make one heck of a package for it to supercede the "huge" crown vic.
