Ford Aerostar Originally conceived as an answer to the first Chrysler minivans, the Aerostar is an old school rear-drive van that's at its best when it's harnessed for hard work. It can haul--and tow--heavier loads than the front-drive crowd, and gets the job done with a fair degree of comfort and style.

Smile Hello Everyone!

I have just recently bought an Aerostar from a family member and i for some reason after driving in for about a week it will not go into park or reverse, thankfully i can still start the car in neutral and drive to work but i am not really sure what broke....The people that i bought the van from had no real big issuse with it. it was originally the persons work van to haul around all of his tools for trade (heating and cooling tech), the owner kept up the up keep on a regular basis, recently rebuilt the tranny, new brakes Etc...When it happened i was turning around and was shifting into reverse when i heard a thunk, at that point there wasnt any resistance to the shifter. It will still go into O/D, Drive, 1st and second, i looked under the van to make sure the shift linkage was still connected and sadly it was... basicly i am writing to find out if anyone else has any ideas on what could be wrong? I personally think that its cable or what ever connecting device that goes from the shifter to the actual shift linkage might have been stretched but i havent had the time or the right tools to disesemble the steering colum.

Thanks to anyone that responds in advance!

possible Transmission Range sensor. It is the sensor that detects the Shifter knob's position. (located in the steering column)
