Ford Aerostar Originally conceived as an answer to the first Chrysler minivans, the Aerostar is an old school rear-drive van that's at its best when it's harnessed for hard work. It can haul--and tow--heavier loads than the front-drive crowd, and gets the job done with a fair degree of comfort and style.

Default 92' Aerostar XL Sport: 3.0L Problems

Sup Forums, im new here and Im the new owner of a 1992 Ford Aerostar XL with the Sport Package. This van ran fine when i looked at it initally, and it was running smoothly under its own power, save for it had a problem with the alternator. The Quirks!

The Van (3.0L V6 with the 4 speed transmission (Non automatic overdrive)) Seems to have a stupid problem of a Funky idle, and a hesitation. The Idle sounds like the van is gonna die (up and down but not so much as its REALLY tell able, i can tell more from the van shaking) but it doesnt die. Along with this. sometimes when letting your foot off the gas or starting from a stop, the van will not move, itll just make a grumbling noise and sit there (engine running) if i let my foot off and give it another go, it will go as far as i know. the van will cruise on the highway with absoutly no issues and this is only effective at idle and stops/braking as noted. it did it the other day as i was backing up and the van died. i had to wait a few minutes to restart it. again when moving it runs fine nice and steady. we have driven it 50+ miles one way as it is and its fine. any ideas? i was considering cat converter of fuel filter, but i dont wanna guesstimate.

one other question, the van is missing the passenger side running board that came with the sport package, does anyone know the part number for these?

and one last stupidity the steering is loose as ass get up. when i turn the wheels they move right away, however to go straight the wheel has to be facing towards the left of the van kinda like (\) that wayish. any ideas?

would really apreacite the knowlage. thanks

for the idle vacuum leak!! look at the intake leaking around the gasket, you coluld use intake cleaner to spray around the intake the idle should change.

For your steering issue: It sounds like you need a front end alignment. I'd look around junk yards for the running board until you find one that matches your paint. It will save you a boatload of money vs. going to the dealership.

First have the codes run, before spending a lot of money at it. Also check the sparkplugs and wires. To check wires, hook a inductive timing light to each wire and look to see if the plug is firing. Steering, I agree with confued check the alinment.

I agree on that. I tuned up mine once. Midas can do it from now on. It is a PITA to get to two of the plugs.
