Ford Aspire Measured against other cars in this class, it's reasonably roomy and does have its appeal. It's well-suited for use as a second or third family car, with safety features that take some of the worry out of handing it over to younger drivers. And it's an excellent commuter vehicle - comfortable, durable and cheap to operate.

Default Engine Misfire at Running Temperature

I have a '97 Aspire and once the engine gets to running temperature it begins to misfire and throw the following codes.

p0300 - random misfire
p0304 - cylinder 4 misfire
p0400 - egr malfunction
p0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
p0470 - back pressure sensor

I just bought the car so I'm not sure what all has been worked on, it has new plugs and wires for sure. I inspected the plugs (1 and 4), they have a white coating which I believe means the engine is running lean. Any ideas? Thanks.

the egr valve is most likely sticking. which would cause the engine to run lean and misfire. the misfiring engine most likey plugged up the cat converter which is causing the back pressure sensor to go off along with the Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold code. try cleaning the egr valve first and then you will most likely have to change the cat converter.

The thermostat may be your problem. Remove the thermostat and check it when it is cold to see that it is closed. Put the thermostat in a pan of hot water on a stove. The thermostat should be open when the water is near boiling. If the thermostat is okay, the temperature sensor may be your problem.
