Ford Bronco Until the mid '90s, the Ford Bronco was famous for being a rough-and-tumble off-road vehicle that had been tackling trails and fording streams since the 1960s. It was also one of the first sport-utility vehicles: a versatile truck then described by Ford as being able to serve as a family sedan, sports roadster, snowplow or farm and civil defense vehicle.

Default Vapor Lock? Are you sure?

I only ask because I have a 89 bronco and what I thought was vapor lock ended up being a bad coil. A few suggestions for vapor lock:

Replace gas cap with a new or known good cap

make sure all fuel lines are routed away from heat sources.

check fuel pump for proper fuel pressure.

Hope these suggestions help.

vapor lock means the fuel in the lines vaporizes and pressurizes the fuel lines to the point the fuel pump won't draw fuel from the tank...

I had a hopped up LTD that was prone to this..., I fixed it by converting to an electric fuel pump and regulating the pressure...

Default stall, rough start & possible vapor lock

I own an 89 Bronco, 351 Winsor. I recently, in the past several months, have replaced the air-intake valve, new plugs & wires, air and crank filters, starter & relay, and the fuel filter and pump. After I had the plugs, wires and air-intake valve replaced, I did notice an improvement in the engine performance. Shortly after that my Bronco started to stall or completely shut off when I slowed down to stop or make a turn. I have to wait about 3-5 minutes to start it again, as it seems to drag if I try to do so immediately. I was told this was vapor lock and since I do smell gas after it does start, that would seem to be true. But I didn't think vapor lock was a problem with EFI. Any thoughts?

I have the same thing with an 89 Bronco and 351 Windsor. I thought I had found the problem when I pulled off the whole manifold and found a snapped EGR line that was blasting hot exhaust ont he fuel distribution log...but once it got hot (Arizona) it did it again..... did you finally fix your problem? One of the posts I saw makes sense...sugggests venting the sealed cap..as I note that it does pressurize (negatively) when I open the cap.

I'm also having a vapor lock type of problem with my 80 Bronco, it has a carb, not fuel inj. We have changed fuel pumps and now has a elec. fuel pump, new coil complete tune up, rerouted the fuel lines and the exhaust pipes and it still is locking up. After reading some on the new fuels that are coming put of the gas stations today, I'm thinking that I have a fuel line closing off when the truck is hot.

I'm working away from home right now, and left my Bronco at the airport. When my dad picked it up, it died on him three times while taking it to his house. He refuses to drive it anymore. I did replace the starter with a newer one and it also dragged after it stalled those three times. So it doesn't seem to be a starter/replay problem. Maybe a bad electric fuel pump?? Other electrical problem???

Have you changed your fuel filter lately? mine would die, wait about 5 min. start back, filter was full of rust from the tank, when it was running it would stir up the rust, after it died the rust would fall to the bottom of the filter and let gas flow for awhile, just a thought.

For those '89 broncos pull diagnostic codes from your computer... here's how
Code Reader..... - Ford Bronco Zone Forums

vapor lock with an EFI??? not likely the fuel pump pushes the fuel out of the tank at approx 30 PSI
