Ford Bronco Until the mid '90s, the Ford Bronco was famous for being a rough-and-tumble off-road vehicle that had been tackling trails and fording streams since the 1960s. It was also one of the first sport-utility vehicles: a versatile truck then described by Ford as being able to serve as a family sedan, sports roadster, snowplow or farm and civil defense vehicle.

Default 5th gear issue / clicking issue

Hello again :-)

Thanks for the help with the smog issues, I got my sons 86 Bronco II w 2.9 V6 to smog well below averages.

Now, though, there's a new issue has cropped up. Now that it's running right, he has taken it onto the freeway, and been able to try to shift into 5th gear - but it won't stay there. It runs fine in all other gears, but if you put it in 5th it jumps straight out. If you try to hold the gear lever into 5th you can feel the gears trying to kick it out.

What should I look at?

The second issue I think I know, but would ask if anyone has any other ideas. When the engine's been running for long enough to get hot it starts a 'clicking' noise that speeds up or slows down with engine RPM, and the oil pressure light goes on and off. I suspect clogged oil drain-down ways trapping the oil at the top of the engine. Any "I agree" or "No, check XXX instead" guesses?

You should look at 5th gears.

No idea on the click though.

I've been told that when a transmission keeps kicking itself out of gear like that the problem is usually synchronizers, but I can't say that for sure. Your trans is a toploader, so it's definitely an internal problem since there's no linkage to adjust.

As to the ticking, I'd be shocked if it's what you're thinking. When the oil is hot it's thinner. If the oil passageways for drainoff were stopped up, you'd experience the problem when the oil was thicker, not thinner. Sounds like you have oil pressure problems. It may be the pump itself, but it's just as likely to be a worn engine. Worn bearings would explain the low pressure and the noise.

Not true. His transmission does not have a top cover. It has a bottom pan, so it is a bottomloader. Still, it is an internal problem relating to 5th gears, so that is where he needs to look.

Really? What transmission is that? Being a Bronco II I was thinking it was a M5OD.

First year for the M5OD-R1 was 1988, two years after his Bronco II.

I think he has a Mitsubishi transmission (weird tin pan), but I am not sure. The only other possibility is the Toyo Kogyo 5-speed (flat aluminum pan).

So on both of those the shift linkage is below? How does that work? does the linkage run down the side of the trans and enter underneath?

Shift linkage is on top in both of them. They use a 3-rail system in the transmission operated by a single rod in the tail housing. Shift tower bolts to the top of the tail.

83 & 84 Toyo Kogyo 2-wheel drives, both 4-speed & 5-speed, had a lot of problems, primarily destroying the tail housing, yoke, and sometimes the output shaft. And there are about 7 or 8 different non-interchangeable tail housings in those two years. The only other major thing that I sold when they were the "in" thing was front bearing retainers.

I never did sell much of anything for those 85 and later.

Today the only thing that still sells occasionally is the 83-84 front bearing retainer and a gear now and then. Not only were the 83-84 Toyos a nightmare for tail housings, but the internals were just as bad if not worse. Lots of identically looking parts that would not interchange.

I think 83-84 were experimental years between the earlier Courier Toyos (which never went bad) and the later Toyos which seem to have had the bugs worked out. Once the bugs were gone, they redesigned and re-cased them into the M5OD series and REALLY had problems.
