Ford BroncoUntil the mid '90s, the Ford Bronco was famous for being a rough-and-tumble off-road vehicle that had been tackling trails and fording streams since the 1960s. It was also one of the first sport-utility vehicles: a versatile truck then described by Ford as being able to serve as a family sedan, sports roadster, snowplow or farm and civil defense vehicle.
Blue Beast,
You're right. I missed the fact that he is running 38's on there.
It HAS to be that when he is in 4WD he has it in 4 low, I was wondering if he had no power how he could get through mud. That explains it. He needs to regear his rear.
You can check the tag on the rear, if it is still there.

Oh.. and if you plan to continue to run 38's you need to have at least chrom moly axel shafts, or upgrade to a f250 rear, with 3/4in axels

If he has an 8.8 then he definately needs to upgrade but if it has a 9" then that is plenty strong enough for most florida off roading. I have seen alot of broncos down here running some big tires on 9" rears with no problem, since when you do dig down in the mud you are more likely to hit a layer of clay then rock so you don't ever get the sudden traction like in more northern areas when you dig down and hit rock. I wouldn't trust the axle tag just jack it up and spin the tire and count pinion spins then see if it matches the tag someone may have regeared it but I know alot of guys who throw big tires on and run it until the trans starts slipping and then dump them. I would change out the tranny fluid since running big tires increases the heat build up in it especially in Fla!

If you have intermittant running problems or a flat spot/buck/dying/cutting out while accelerating.
Do your self a favor and try some dedicated gas
line dryer, Double or even triple dose it, It's cheaper
then throwing parts at a problem that doesn't throw
codes!!

i had the rear end changed to a 9in. don't know what gears are in it though.have to change tranny fluid see if that helps. sounds great in park and neutral. just wants to die out in gear and still lack of power. still working on it keep up with the help. thanks scott
BTW... its been mentioned in other forums, that 33's are where one will start to see a lack of power on 3.55 rear.

Do the tire spin pinion look and tell us the gear ratio. You don't want to run it with mismatched ratios in the front and rear. My bronco has plenty of power and will pull most cars off the line with 33" but I got a great motor and trans in it still on the stock gear ratio!

cbu,
why not let us know if it is a dog in 4x4 high or not?
Does it only run well when in 4x4 low?

just a update. i ended up swapping motors. put in a 351. now it runs good. i think the problem was that the 302 had a aftermarket cam put in. and it wasn't dialed in correctly. and that threw the timing off so much that it ran like crap. i thank all that tried to help this fla redneck.........scott
