Ford Bronco Until the mid '90s, the Ford Bronco was famous for being a rough-and-tumble off-road vehicle that had been tackling trails and fording streams since the 1960s. It was also one of the first sport-utility vehicles: a versatile truck then described by Ford as being able to serve as a family sedan, sports roadster, snowplow or farm and civil defense vehicle.

Exclamation *^ BRONCO XL-Fuel system question from Newbie

Hi, We bought the 1986 Bronco XL last yr w/a plow attachment and plow on it. I just recently started using it w/out the plow for everyday use. It was running ok then last night it started making a horrid sound from the rear on the drivers side. It smelt like burning rubber. Some chunks of rust fell off but I didn't notice any fluids spilling or obvious changes to the truck. After sitting for 1/2 hr she ran fine. The ride was rougher but ran ok until I slowed down to exit the highway. Then it got noisy again. I don't know if that's related to the problem tonight or not. Today I drove her intown(max speed 30 mph) and she suddenly stopped while going up a hill. The man from the autoclub said it must be the fuel filter. Are there other things I can check before investing in a new fuelfilter? Maybe there's something else wrong like a relay switch etc. Hopefully something I can just fix on my own using a few tools, simple parts and common sense.Where would my fuel pump be? Any help would be much appreciated.

fuel filter is on the driver's side frame rail. Replacement is with a few simple tools.

You have two fuel pumps, A high pressure one near the fuel filter, and a low pressure one in the tank.

Thanks. I'll take it with Coffee. At least I now know where to start looking.

Sounds like your high pressure fuel pump has gone out. You should hear it when you first turn the key, It is right below the drivers seat on the frame rail. If you hear that one then unplug the electric connector and try and start it if it won't start then the low pressure pump is probably gone. The truck will run with just the low pressure pump but will starve for fuel on high load, If the high pressure is running it can cavitate and you will get bubbles in your fuel line and cause it to stop running!! I think the low pressure pump will only supply like 20 psi or so.

If you have intermittant running problems or a flat spot/buck/dying/cutting out while accelerating.
Do your self a favor and try some dedicated gas
line dryer, Double or even triple dose it, It's cheaper
then throwing parts at a problem that doesn't throw
codes!!
