Ford Bronco Until the mid '90s, the Ford Bronco was famous for being a rough-and-tumble off-road vehicle that had been tackling trails and fording streams since the 1960s. It was also one of the first sport-utility vehicles: a versatile truck then described by Ford as being able to serve as a family sedan, sports roadster, snowplow or farm and civil defense vehicle.

Default Trans Shifting Hard

1994 Bronco 4WD, 5.0. Here is the problem,Trans intermittently starts shifting hard through the gears and sometimes it feels like it goes into neutral and the ABS light is on.
I drove the truck with a hand held scanner and when the erratic shifting happens it reads 0 MPH on the vehicle speed sensor line, but the speedo is correct, when it shifts normal the scanner reads the correct MPH. I changed the VSS and still the same intermittent problem. all the while the ABS light is on. The trans was rebuilt about a month ago and the vehicle has 110,000 miles. Any help would be appreciated.

Having same problem with 99 Taurus Wagon. Going to change speed sensor which is located above catalytic converter. When the engine gets to operating temp, the problem occurs.

to the bronco owners, although this is a 2006 thread.

1990 and forward, the broncos had the E4OD trans. Electronically controlled. The sensors that the PCM uses (at least in part) are the TPS, VSS, and load sensors to determine shifting points.

The VSS from 1992 forward is located in the rear diff and serves dual purpose, as the RearABS sensor, and VSS. Prior to 1992 the VSS was located in the transfercase. The RABS was still in the rear diff.
