Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Default 1999 Ford Contour 2.5 L V6 - interference?

Is this an interference engine, or a non-interference?

I'm looking at buying a used one that needs a new timing belt. But I don't want to buy it if it's an interference engine (and therefore probably needs engine work).

The 2.5 L Duratec engine has two timing chains so yes, it's interference.

Not exactly a philosophy, more like a stereotype.

Chains have overtaken belts for use on interference engines (probably because owners don't change them on time).

Even the Chevy 2.2 I4 has a chain but alas, it tends to break around 80K and destroy the engine.

Anyway, the 2.5 L V6 Duratec is interference. Luckily the chaions seem to handle 200K with little problem.

Default Timing Issues

My questions are about the 2.5 V6 duratec engine in the 98 ford contour. Ok so here's my question I had to replace the time chain guides and chain's on this engine but when I went to get the timing marks lined up ( it says match the lines on the cams horizontally) there was no way to get them matched and have the valve's closed, they would hit when you turned it manualy. ALso there are two positions on the crankshaft position sensor plate which one is right. I followed the oil stains on the backside of it but it still seems wrong. Any information would help. Thank you for your time.

My Haynes manual does not describe the alignment procedure quite the same way you have. It says the camshaft sprocket marks (on the rear side of the sprockets) are to face one another and the crankshaft key-way is to be at 11 o'clock. The coloured links on the chain are to be aligned with the index marks on the front of the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.

Hope this helps.

Forgot about the position sensor. Haynes says to install the position sensor pulse wheel on the crankshaft so the key-way in the pulse wheel marked "2.5L" is engaged with the crankshaft key.

Probably not symmetrical drive on pulse wheel. Hope this helps

Default Timing marks

Thanks for the quick response. I looked at the marks on the Crankshaft position key sensor plate and I had it correct. On the camshaft markings the left side of the engine has two markings that make sense but on the other side the two markings have about a 1-1/2 inch gap in between them. Which line do I line it up to ? Also do the marks on the front of the camshafts mean anything ? Thanks again for your help.

The marks on the front of the camshaft are for alignment of the coloured links on the chain, see my first post to you above. I did not know that the rear of the camshaft sprockets had two marks close together, but that is probably the reason for the chain coloured links and the alignment marks on the front of the cam sprockets.

Good luck.
