Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Default 1999 ford contour- error code P1383

What do I need to check for with this error code?

My contour will crank but not turn over. I've checked the spark plugs, coils, replaced fuel filter, can hear fuel pump when I turn key to "on" position for a second. I think it may be my timing belt. I took cover off and cannot see it broke. When I crank, timing belt or pulleys do no turn.

Any ides would be appreciated.

thx....kg

P1383 Variable Cam Timing Over-retarded.

This is usually reported when the VCT does not actuate, or if the timing belt was installed wrong.

It may well appear if the timing belt breaks.

If the cams are not rotating with the crank you will need a new timing belt, idler, and tensioner (and maybe water pump). Beware! even dealers have installed timing belts wrong on the Zetec VCT engine, if timing codes come up after repair the new belt may be on wrong.
