Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Default Replacing Variable Valve Timing "Actuator"

My fiancee has been told that the Variable Valve Timing "Actuator" needs to be replaced on her 2000 4cyl countour. The mechanic wants to charge $700-$775 to replace it. Anyone know if this is a reasonable price or not?

Thanks,
Erik

Yes this is a normal price for a VCT unit replacement. (Variable Cam Timing)

However, before getting it done;

The timing belt should be changed at about 100,000 miles (along with the idler pulley and tensioner).
If this problem (timing code) started with the timing belt being replaced, it was not done right. Timing codes can result from the timing belt jumping a tooth so always check timing belt condition and static timing when in doubt. Dirt and varnish can stop the unit from working (this is common). Run a varnish remover through the oil (I like Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam), do not use kerosene based flush products for this. The engine must be driven at speed for cleaners to reach the VCT. The coil can also burn out. The coil electrical connector plugs in on top of the valve cover near the front. Make certain it is plugged in and check the coil winding with a continuity check.
