Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Unhappy Timeing belt Tensioner

I recently bought a used '96 Ford Contour "as is" no warrenty. Only drove it 500 miles. It ran great! While sitting at a stop sign I heard a little rattle up front the the car died. tried to start it once, nothing. After a few minutes I found the problem, timeing belt tensioner. How much damage did this to to the valves and head? Local garage says around $1400.00 to fix. It has a2.0 4cyl.

Do you know if this is an interference engine?

I believe it is an interference. If you did damage the valves, 1400 sounds ok. new belt, new tensioner, redeaked heads and possiably new valves...

Ok, well you need to find that out. Then you'll know if the estimate is more truthful.

The 2.0 is NOT an interference engine.

It will still cost $500+ to have a timing belt put on if you don't do it yourself.

the reason it cost $400 to $550 YOU have to put a spring, and new tensioner, at factory it does not come with a spring kit, the kit is $250 then the belt $60.

If you do it yourself you will need:

A belt
Tensioner pulley assembly
Idler pulley
Valve cover gasket set
Alignment tool (make one)

This will be around $150
