Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Default Head gasket project

Hi everyone. Today a friend of mine brought his 2000 CNG Contour over to me, so I could take a look at it, he had been having some kind of ignition trouble with it. Well, I popped the hood and started poking around, he said he had replaced the coil pack because he thought it wasnt getting spark, so I put a timing light on the wires and watched for spark while he cranked it. There was definietly something going on. I would get spark, then I wouldnt, so I kept poking around, and I happened to notice anti freeze all over the floor of my shop. So I got a closer look and this big puddle was coming from the braided stainless flex pipe on the exhaust. So, right away I popped a plug out and would'nt ya know it, there was antifreeze all over the electrode of the plug. I checked all the other plugs and found the same, and determined that the head gasket was bad. I opened the coolant tank and it stunk like exhaust, so that backed up my theory. I then was told that sometime earlier the coolant leaked out of the radiator, and he drove it about 15 miles with no coolant, so that explained that!! Anyway, I started taking everything apart and when I got the exhaust manifold off, it had antifeeze in the exhaust ports, all 4 of them!! I couldn't believe it was that bad. I havent got the head off yet, but I am thinking I am gonna find some big time warpage or a cracked head, for all that antifreeze to be around, it might not be a good thing. Basically I was wondering if you Contour people out there have any tips or strange things for me to know about this head gasket job, I know to use new head bolts, and torque everything in sequnce as per the FSM, and I have done many head gaskets on other cars. But you know how it is, every car has its different features. Oh and by the way, I forgot to mention, this car has a 2.0 "Z" VIN. Any advice would be welcome.----Thanks Jack
