Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Smile idle surge with a/c on 96 contour

After the engine starts to warm up it starts to surge when sitting at stop lights and sometimes dies. Check engine light is on and have replaced O2 sensors per auto zone readout. Other than that the car runs good. Not sure where to go from here. Checked vacuum on EGR valve and holds a vacuum. Haven't taken EGR valve off and cleaned carbon from it yet, but am considering it. Has anyone had any luck cleaning MAF sensor on this car. That fixed a problem on my 2000 Windstar a while back after reading tip about it. Thanks for any suggestions anyone might have on this. nds9fv

Unhappy same problem?

I too have this problem...perhaps the exact same. I can feel the car shake through the steering wheel and pedals at idle. The previous owner of my car (my sister) was told by a mechanic that the car is receiving too much air and not enough gas. The A/C requires more gas thus exhausting the car of gas causing it to stall...so says the mechanic. He did not say how or what was needed to fix it.

I wish you luck in finding an answer to this problem and will let you know of my findings should I come across any. I hope you will do the same for me.
