Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.
Haha, the old recalled but never fixed range sensor...You got armorall or something on it huh? Check with your dealer, see if they'll be kind enough to honor the recall on said part.
Is the range sensor really recalled for Contour?????

I have a 1996 automatic and am experiencing slipping of gears, started happening on the highway now in city driving also. I can usually drive for 20 minutes before it starts bucking. I turn off the overdrive and it works fine. I'm getting my range sensor fixed now but will be annoyed if it turns it was recalled and I never knew!

I have a 96 contour too. I have the SAME sympoms - bucking, slipping, downshifting randomly....lately it has been happening more and more. I finally went and got a new sensor and changed it outside an autozone next to the dealer where I got the part. Took about 30 min (I could do it in 10 now that I know what i'm doing) to change. Car appears to shift fine now thank god.

Default Transmission Range Sensor

After changing that sensor, did it solve your problem. I bought a Ford Contour 2000 and I got the car scanned and the code was PO708 (Transmission Range Sensor), I have a 30 day warranty so they are replacing it so what I am asking you when you change your sensor did it solve that problem and what was the symtoms your car was giving you before you had that sensor change?

Default 98 ford contour 4 cycl auto

Yes, It can happen in a 98, because it happened in mine.

I called some dealers up and i was able to get mine for around 50 dollars including shipping. It is easy to install and my car had the same symptons. It was bucking a lot, and sometimes it would be fine for 100 miles then start up again really bad! It had a mind of it's own. So yes, replace it if u must, but first take it off and try to clean it because it might have some degreaser or something down inside interferring with with the sensor.

I have a 2000 Contour SE (automatic) with 120k miles. This all happened in the same day on my way to work. I can get up to 20mph. However when it tries to shift into the next gear, it starts bucking. It finally shifts gears. It does it again when I get to about 50mph. I was so afraid to slow down because I wasn't sure if I could gain speed again. I got to work but never made it home. I couldn't go past 20mph and it was bucking again. My check engine light came on and I could hear grinding. Therefore, I pulled over and called AAA. I don't know exactly what is wrong. Money is extremely tight. Autozone said they can put it on a computer and give me a code, but only when the check engine light is on. I start my car the other day and the light is not on. Has anyone had a problem like this?

Try going to knechts. Once a code comes on, it is stored in the computer. Once it's stored they should be able to pull the code even with the check engine light off. I know from experience! I don't know if it works on every car that way, but it worked with one of mine. So go to another store and ask them to try anyways. If it works, then i would not delete the code, but at least write the code down and look up information on that here in the ford forums, etc. Also once this is done, I would go back to autozone(if the code reader read it without the check engine light being on) and bet the guy/girl who said they can't do it 20 dollars that it will read the code. lol
