not sure 96 contour

Hello all
i am new here i have a 96 contour, with a 4 banger, here is the problem my wife was driving the car when she saw smoke or steam. she started to pull over by the time she go to the side of the road the car died. pulled the car home and to a look at it, all the car will do when you try to turn it over is crack it doesn't sound like it is firing, we have changed the plugs. wires and the coil. and we checked and found we are getting a spark from the plugs,
but still when we try to turn it over it jsut cranks like there is no fire, i am fresh out of ideas of what to try next, so please help

You said your wife saw smoke or steam. Did you check to see if there is water or oil in the cylinders. If there is, the car will not likely start.
