bought a 96' contour 2.5 v6 gone through 4 water pumps in a month some people say it is a bad head gasket but it is alot of work for nothing how can i find out if it is for sure a head gasket. I love the car it is fast ,sporty and handles great around sharp turns at high speeds
What fails on the water pump, the bearings? If so, then maybe the belt is getting too tight. Actually we need to know why you are replacing the pump. If it is because the motor is overheating then maybe your problem is not the pump, but maybe the thermostat. This is all a guess here. We need more info.
well from what I hear is that the water pumps on V6 contours have a metal housing but a plastic impeller that over time can break apart! now I'm not sure if this only applies to SVT contours or all contours. just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents maybe this may help. also if you have a bad head gasket your oil would seem milky from coolant leaking into the oil pan, also check for air bubbles in your radiator. pull off the cap and run the engine and if you see air bubbles I would say its a head gasket.
