Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Question 1997 Contour Timing Belt Replacement

Hi. My daughter-in-law's '97 Contour GL (2.0 L4) evidently has a timing belt problem. Having limited funds, I've volunteered to help her get it up and running. I've priced the parts (kit) on-line and have one ID'd for purchase. What I need to know is if anyone out there has ever done a hands-on replacment of this system and can provide me a few pointers in what else I need to purchase. A Haynes or similar manual comes to mind for one. But I'm thinking about other parts I might need, such as gasket kits, sensors that need to be replaced, etc. I know I'm "fishing" here but I'd appreciate any and all recommendations / suggestions anyone might be able to provide. I'm traveling from Oregon to Indiana to help (label that DO) this project and would like to be able to complete it as quickly as possible so that I can play some golf. Thanks for your replies. Ed V.

Hello i have a 1995 ford contour 2.0 and i just replaced the timeing belt i suggest that you get a t55 star key and i agree about the book before you remove the timeing belt you will need a piece of steel 1/4 thickness and 8 to 9 inches long the book will explain everything and just a hint to find top dead center of your number 1 piston remove the #1 spark plug stick a long screwdriver in the hole turn your crankshaft till the driver just starts to go down back up till the scewdriver is at the top this is top dead center take your steel plate that you made at the other end of your cam there are 2 slots they will be lined up if not take the star key and gently tuen the cam till you can get the plate in the slots thios will lock the cam that way you can remove the belt and not have anything to worry about throwing it out of time i hope this helps in the book the section is 2-12 have a nice day and good luck
