Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

i have a 99 ford contour with the 2.0 AT. it also only drives in reverse. there is absolutly no movement in any of the forward gears. my guess is that the transmission is bad. any other opinions? is there a DIY on transmission replacment? can i just replace the transmission, or do i neeed to pull the engine also?

First, you need to check your Diagnostic Trouble Codes from the PCM. See if a large auto store will rent you an OBD-II Code Scanner.. It could be just a sensor, but you won't know if you don't check. (Although Contour trans don't have a good reputation.)

You can remove the transmission without removing the engine, but the engine must be supported.

Rebuilding a trans is not a beginner project and getting one out a junk yard is not a good idea either.

i understand where your comming from with the code scanner. however, i believe this is more of the speed sensor problem that most people are having where the tranny slips between shifts. i looked at the replacment procedure, and it dosnt look too fun b/c the subframe needs to be dropped (ie. lots of stuff like the rack needs to be removed.) at least junk yard;s have 30 day warrentes

my transmission wont go into reverse and gears 1 & 2, when you put it to neutral it wont even back up. before the tranny went out. when I made a turn there was a grinding noise comin from the front or underneath the engine.

Park on a hill? Should be able to go forward then.

But seriously its not a beginner job, I really suggest taking it in if your not used to working on them. ATX's are one thing I hope I never have to on. If you do decide to do it on your own, Take pics. I would like to see how well it turns out, And good luck.
