Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Lightbulb Charging system

I just finished installing a new alternator on my son's 97 contour gl. We haven't had one problem with the car whatsoever in the time we have owned it(9 months) and now suddenly the charging system is not working. After installing the new alternator it still does'nt work. Inside the main fuse box under the hood, all the fuses are clean and dry and there are no frayed or corroded wires or connectors that I can find anywhere. Also the new alternator gets very hot(cant hold my hand on it) while the car is idling in the driveway. If i put my charger on the battery while its running it keeps up but thats it. This is driving me nuts...........it cant be that tough can it? oh yea .....on the underside of the top of the fuse box the fuses arent labled so if one were bad i wouldnt know which one to change. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Check for a broken wire on the back of your altenator or a bad battery.

No broken wires and battery load tested fine. I might have to have a tech look at this thing and it really jerks my chain cause it cant be that hard to figure out

Check for 12 volts at the alternator wih the ignition off.
If it's missing, check the mega fuse. This is often behind the engine and down low.

Exclamation Another "Superfuse" nightmare?

I'll put money on your charging problem having to do with the superfuse, which is in it's own plastic holder behind the engine. I replaced an alternator when I read low charge to the battery and found no improvement. After searching I replaced the superfuse everything was fine. This thing can cause all sorts of weird symptoms, I guess because of low charge instead of no charge, so watchout. Not long ago I went to the auto parts store and found a lady crying because she just bought a Contour (first car) and had all these strange electrical problems that a new battery and alternator wouldn't fix. I told her to go back in and buy a $4 superfuse and I'd put it in right there in the parts store parking lot. It solved everything.
