Ford Contour Ford Contour combines sporty driving dynamics with the comfort and practicality of a four-door sedan. It doesn't have the rear-seat space of a Taurus, but Ford improved rear legroom and revised the styling. Contour SVT pours on the coal with a higher output version of the Duratec V6, a sports suspension and bigger brakes.

Default 98 SVT that won't start when it is cold outside

My 98 will turn over but wont start when the temp outside is less than 45 degrees. I can push it, drop the clutch, and it will start. Any ideas on what it is and how to fix it?

Unhappy 1996 Ford Aerostar Van wont start in bitter cold!

I also have this exact same problem in the Michigan Winters. When it gets around 10 degrees or colder out, my 96 Ford Aerostar Van will crank but wont turn over. Its been this way for the last 2 years. Very frustrating. I replaced the fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, and the usual suspected parts, but it still wont start in bitter cold temps. A local mechanic told me to replace the fuel pump saying the bearings in old fuel pumps get worn and loose and may contract causing a short not allowing fuel to the carbuerator in real cold temps. I am about to test his theory but unfortunately its September and I wont know if thats the cure until it gets bitter cold out in a few more months. Anyone else with this same issue? The van runs great in rainy, normal, or otherwise warmer humid conditions. Only at about 10 degrees or less in bitter cold conditions will it not start.

--Thanks

I'm glad you're thinking preventive maintenance.

The most obvious thing I can think of is that when the temperature drops, so does the capacity of the battery to deliver both voltage and amperage. It may be time to replace your battery. 10 degrees can be challenging for even a new one.

Corroded battery terminals, cables, ground wires, etc each add resisstance, and should be checked and cleaned.

Other components that might come into play, but I think less likely are the ECT engine coolent temp sensor, the MAF or MAP (I don't know which system is on your truck), and the IAB (Idle Air Bypass) http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=39
