Ford Crown Victoria Though they were what most people drove in the 1950s and 1960s, full-size cars like the Ford Crown Victoria are now an anomaly. But Ford's biggest sedan still offers significant virtues, including affordable V8 performance and room for six people. Today, the Crown Victoria's passenger and cargo volumes compare favorably against fashionable SUVs.

Default 2002 P71 tranny noises

Hi all, I have a question about a strange noise in my new (to me) 2002 CVPI.

I was driving down the Trans Canada highway yesterday (110 km/h speed limit) and there were some "waves" in the road. When I went over them, there was a noise from right under the console that sounded like someone taking an electric mixer at full speed and hitting sheet metal....

I was doing speed limit, 3 (average sized under 200 lb) adults and a baby on board, trunk empty (so not overloaded). Car sits nice and high and I can't see it bottoming out (the bumps weren't that bad!) Suspension is fairly recent and stiff.

Could this be an emerging transmission problem?

Fixed it!!

Appears the previous owner figured it was a good idea to mount a console with 3" long screws drilled right down the center of the tranny hump.....so needless to say, every time I went over a decent bump in the road, the drive shaft rose up and sheared the ends off the screws causing a huge metal on metal noise.....now I have a big scrape encircling the drive shaft to worry about...

I would look for another drive shaft to be on the safe side from another CVPI .The shafts are aluminum and might rip apart. The last owner should have a 3 inch screw put in his head.
