Question Testing Heater parts

First - I'm new to the forum - great to have this kind of resource!
I have a 96 E-150 straight 6 (300). The heater fan up and died without warning. Since I've stepped into the computer age with this van I bought a multimeter and I'm learning how to use it. My manual says to test the fan motor first - my logic, run a fused wire from the battery to the motor and a wire to a ground - is there a better way? Will I fry the motor? Then - if that's not the issue, the manual instructs me to test the resistor - would appreciate any advice on this process.

That sounds like a perfect way to test the motor.

When I worked in the parts business thats how I tested blower motors. I actually put the blower motor on the starter tester and put twelve volts to the blower.

As far as checking the resistor you could check the voltage at the hot side of the blower motor harness. At lower speeds the voltage should be lower.
