Ford Econoline There's more to the Econoline's staying power than Ford simply sticking with a product that has been the No. 1-selling full-size van since 1980. The Econoline has received only minor changes over the years. The result is a cargo van that looks different, but is still very much the same. For many E-Series customers, that is the best news of all.

Default Overdrive button
I have never before driven a Ford van, until I bought a 1991 Econoline E-350 Diesel a couple of days ago. Actually I am going to pick it up tomorrow. I only had a brief test drive with it on small dirt roads. Under the instrument cluster is a button and a pilot light that says "Overdrive off". The lamp has burned out so I was wondering what is the function of this button. Does it shift the overdrive on, off, or both? When am I supposed to use it? I won't have an Owner's Manual for this truck before mid-February, so I need some help to know the usage of this switch.

It is for keeping the transmission from engaging into overdrive. You should use it to disengage overdrive when your driving through a hilly rural area or pulling a trailer.

So I push this button once and the light goes on (if working) and the transmission won't shift to overdrive? Right?

Correct. Then push it again and it will let it shift into Overdrive.
