Ford EconolineThere's more to the Econoline's staying power than Ford simply sticking with a product that has been the No. 1-selling full-size van since 1980. The Econoline has received only minor changes over the years. The result is a cargo van that looks different, but is still very much the same. For many E-Series customers, that is the best news of all.
Hey, I have a 86E-150 W/4.9-300 It was running perfect yesterday but was missing real bad when I cranked it up today. I went up the road and it got worse. Chugging, smoking and popping, very weak and unresponsive. I came back home and it would just barely idle in the driveway for a couple secs then cut off. I came back later and could get any fire on it at all. The dist. is new and the rotor is turning. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
I was out in the yard working all day sat. w/ the radio on and the switch was in the forward position 'cause it wont turn backwards. Would that have burned anything out?
It is a 86 model. It has the module on the side of the dist. I took the module off and had it tested and it was good. I also tried a new coil and still no fire. Is there anything inside the dist. that could have went out?
I am guessing that you have an old duraspark ignition in an '86.
WIth them there is a pick coil inside the distributor that can go bad.
When you say that you have no fire, do you mean that you checked for spark and you have no spark?
Did you check for spark at the coil and at a plug?
Look for 12 volts at the bat side of the coil.
Make sure the other little wire is well connected, and has continuity to the ignition module.
I *think* there is a grounding wire inside the distributor. If so, make sure it is clean and tight.
There is a method in the haynes manual of how to test the various circuits with a test light, and or a voltmeter.
