Ford Econoline There's more to the Econoline's staying power than Ford simply sticking with a product that has been the No. 1-selling full-size van since 1980. The Econoline has received only minor changes over the years. The result is a cargo van that looks different, but is still very much the same. For many E-Series customers, that is the best news of all.

Angry 1992 e-150 starter problems

ok, i have a big problem and its starting to get me angry. on sunday i wanted to use the van but it didn't stat. it only made a rapid clicking sound coming from the selinoid. i just thought it was the battery so i had my neighbor give me a jump start, it turned on. so i got a new battery, and a new starter because i had that happened before but it went away, so now the van starts normally but now the damn starter won't stop cranking! i know its not the starter because i changed the NEW one for another NEW one just to make sure. but i still get the same damn problem! if theirs anyone that can help me out on this one ill really appreciate it. thanks

Ignition switch.

Some people have a large ring of keys hanging from the igniton switch and this can cause problems over time.

oh ok, but would it be the mechanical or the electrical part of the switch?

Is the ignition switch returning back to "run" position? If it sticks in start position, or it only comes back partially, or it wobbles or move or has a lot of play, then it could be the ignition, but I'd say most likely the starter solenoid is sticking.

not it not the selinoid, its my 2nd starter and it does the same. the switch does play or stay on "start" someone else told me its the electrical part, the ignition switch that connects to the ignition switch lock

asssuming you have bench tested the starters and found them to work perfectly...

if you have a starter solenoid on the core support next to/near the battery, try disconnecting the starter switch wire and use a jumper wire to start the car using the soleniod. if it works fine, then you need to test the ign switch. if it still stays cranking when you pull the jumper off, then the solenoid may be bad.

if you do not have a starter solenoid on the core support and all wiring goes to the starter, make sure you have connected the wires to the starter motor correctly - some starter motors have a second spade terminal on the solenoid to feed the ign coil the best voltage possible when cranking the vehicle. incorrect connections can cause the starter to run on.

hope this helps

Default 1992 E-150 starter, cylinoid, ignition switch issues

I recently have had a stater issue. It happened righ before this last Christmas, the day afte we had a severe Arctic cold spell settle on here in western South Dakota.

Started my van, and there was high pitched whizzing sound, then my motor stopped all of a sudden. I went to try and restart the van, and all there was was a clicking sound. I was told by someone with good background in mechanics that that was the cylinoid. Also, the key ignition was very diffiuclt to turn due to the extreme cold tempurature.

A concensus was that there is a mechanism in the starter that can get stuck. It engages with the motor/transmission to start the process of it turning over and so forth. This mechanism, a spindle of some sort that the starter thrusts into the tranny to turn it, can get stuck in that position and become damaged/destroyed, causing the starter to completely inoperative.

Someonebody said that I might try hitting the starter with a hammer to try and see if it may dislodge the spindle from being stuck in the start postion. I did, and it was not a solution in this particular case. In my trying to start it, ran the battery down, checked the charge, it was not good, bought a new arctic battery but that was not and absolutely nothing improved.

Had it towed, the shop said it was the starter. Had it replaced, and with the new battery and starter, all was well again. Then last night, after another couple days of severe cold again, same thing happened.

Started my van and this time there was an incredible mechanical sound of something running at an incredible speed. It was not the transmission, or motor, but someting else. I immediately tried turning it off. The motor did turn off but even in the off postion, the starter continued turning because the vehicle was making the typical starting sounds when you turn the key the motor begins the starting process.

I would turn the ignition on and the car would start, turn it off, and the it would still be engaged in starting but would not catch because I had it turned off. I started it again and this time tried moving the vehicle or putting it in drive to see if that would stop the sound.

It did in a few minutes. Drove the van around the block a couple of times, parked it, turned it off, and nothing. Full lights, but this time not even a clicking sound.

the shop is coming back to pick it and replace the starter under warrenty.
