Ford EconolineThere's more to the Econoline's staying power than Ford simply sticking with a product that has been the No. 1-selling full-size van since 1980. The Econoline has received only minor changes over the years. The result is a cargo van that looks different, but is still very much the same. For many E-Series customers, that is the best news of all.
I was curious to know if anyone has any issues with the rear a/c on the 15 passenger e-350. Mine only blows hot air out near the floor, no matter how I set the controls. No air comes out the ceiling vents. I think there is an actuator that isn't working properly, so the air is being directed through the rear heater. I went ahead and too the interior trim off and felt the a/c lines coming to the rear condensor, and that seemed normal. I don't know where to go at this point other than taking the whole thing apart. I don't have access to a factory shop manual, so I have no reference for any parts or procedures involving the rear a/c. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks, Phil
Do you have 4 switches on dash for climate controls? one is rear a/c? Could be a vacuum leak on this switch. There is alot of good info posted on this site for Windstar A/C having the same issues. Scroll down on this page, find "Forum Jump" go to Windstar
GOOD LUCK

I'll read the Windstar rear a/c info, and see if it appears to be the same setup. I have 4 controls on the dash, one for the rear, front, temperature, and a main control (IE. max a/c, defrost, etc.) I also have a rear control switch located in the rear. Thanks for you help.

Oh yeah, it would help to mention the year haha! Its a 2000 E-350 XL Super Duty, with the 5.4 liter V8. I wish I had some pictures of the rear unit. I should have taken some when I had the rear trim removed. Another thing I remember seeing was several relays, and wiring harnesses. I don't remember seeing any actuators that moved anything. However, I didn't take it apart any further to investigate it at that point. I was looking for any kind of lever that moved any kind of blend door, but couldn't locate one. I do remember there being what appeared to be a vacuum line running to a point about a foot from the blower motor itself. I'll probably have to pull the rear trim and take a good look again, I hesitate because the trim mounting and connections don't strike me as at all very durable. I'll also take some pictures when I pull the trim again, so I have some better reference.
It sounds like you are going to have to take it apart to see what is going on, or NOT!
Since the info is a little scant, perhaps you can share the pictures that you take and write up a little tutorial so that we can share it with others who need it in the future.
Taz,
just locate the thread and then copy and paste the URL into your reply.

Update:
Well, I located the problem. The linkage between the vacuum actuator and the blend door is either broken or disconnected. I can't see it well enough to know which, but after some testing I have found it to be the issue. I will save the details for my write-up. However, I can't remove the vacuum actuator. There is one visible bolt holding it in, but the bolt is completely inaccessible by any tool. The only way I can get to it, was if I were able to remove the entire hvac unit. I can't do that without disconnecting the a/c lines, and I don't have the tools to deal with that, or the knowledge to replace any lost refrigerant. right now, I'm going to leave it apart, and see if I can think of anything besides breaking the the bolt out of the plastic or something drastic like that. I would show you a picture of the bolt, but I can't get a camera near enough. I will do a write up on what I have done though.
I have read a few posts where the owner rigs up a wire (coat hanger, choke cable...) and you open/close it manually. It may not be pretty but it would be functional, and I'll never see it from my house ! LOL !
GOOD LUCK
