Ford EconolineThere's more to the Econoline's staying power than Ford simply sticking with a product that has been the No. 1-selling full-size van since 1980. The Econoline has received only minor changes over the years. The result is a cargo van that looks different, but is still very much the same. For many E-Series customers, that is the best news of all.
Agreed. The ideal, in most cases, is an '03 with the 7.3L powerstroke. (I believe '03 was the last year of the 7.3l)
Personally, as much as they are somewhat reliable, I still wouldn't touch a 6.0 or 6.4 - both were rushed thru design phase due to tightening mandatory emissions standards, and both are well-known for multiple design flaws.
The 7.3L powerstroke was a great engine when it was released in the second half of '94, and by '03 they had tweaked the design into one of the most reliable diesel engines ever made.
And incidentally, I'd have to go with the older 7.3L IDI (available after the 6.9 and up to the first half of '94) as a second choice. Sure, it's a far older design - but super-solid & reliable.
Oh, and one more tidbit - if you plan to do a WVO conversion, the ONLY diesel engine you want is the late model 7.3L - DO NOT convert a 6.0 or 6.4! Even the 7.3 IDI is not an ideal choice.
