Ford Econoline There's more to the Econoline's staying power than Ford simply sticking with a product that has been the No. 1-selling full-size van since 1980. The Econoline has received only minor changes over the years. The result is a cargo van that looks different, but is still very much the same. For many E-Series customers, that is the best news of all.

Clogged filter.

Bad pressure regulator.

Both could give you low pressure at the fuel rail.

Default thanks for your help guys

Finally found the problem after replacing the filter and clearing fuel lines had the pump out and tested it there is a black wire that goes into the sender unit with a terminal in the top of the unit its an earth wire well the terminal has a bad connection so will work out of the vehicle but not when fitted in the tank hope to have normal service resumed and have it back on the road again im looking forward to that drive

Boy it stinks that you didn't see that earlier. I recall another gentleman had issues with the same connection. He ended up running a new wire or two through it and glued it up. He was happy with his fix.

i have now fixed the fuel pump and refitted it working fine fitted the tank back in and it fired up and ran sweet i drove it to the fuel station and put fuel in it and it refused to start again but the pump is working fine now if i crank the engine for a long time and pump the gas pedal it will start and run for a short time before cutting out and refusing to start again i have fitted a new fuel filter and i have fuel up to the injection rail if i push in the valve on the rail i have pressurized fuel there any ideas? if not anyone want to buy it for spares or repairs knew i should have bought the older one with a carb and distributer

Can you smell raw fuel ?

Sounds like it is running super rich, which could be an injector partially stuck open or an Idle Air Bypass valve stuck closed. You could have alos "splash fouled" the plugs and even gotten fuel in the crankcase in an extreme case.

Try this. After cranking and not starting a couple of times, hold the accelerator pedal to the floor and crank again. If this works, it is almost certainly a stuck Idle Air Bypass.

doesnt smell of fuel but the plugs looked a bit black and had a very yellow spark . Another person sugested it might be an air leak in one of the fuel lines as i have had them apart a few times. Don't know if it is worth mentioning that the engine has always hunted at idle since i bought it.
