Ford EconolineThere's more to the Econoline's staying power than Ford simply sticking with a product that has been the No. 1-selling full-size van since 1980. The Econoline has received only minor changes over the years. The result is a cargo van that looks different, but is still very much the same. For many E-Series customers, that is the best news of all.
I recently bought a 1963 ford econoline pick-up. The engine's shot. I am wanting to know if I can replace it with a 240CU engine with no modifications? Will it bolt up to the transmission and will the motot mounts need to be re-positioned?
The econoline uses Falcon engines(170,200)while the 240 is(was)a full size car/truck engine. It will not bolt to the trans. It is also taller and longer than the smaller sixes. If you want to keep a six your best bet is a later 200.Mavericks,Fairmonts,80-82 t-birds,some fox mustangs as well as older falcons & mustangs got the 200.They are relativly easy to find and will bolt right in.BTW,if you find one in any Fairmont,79-up mustang or those 80-82 t-birds,you'll need to reuse your oil pan/pickup-the newer cars use a different pan to clear the rack& pinion steering.
If you want a bit more power(but still want a 6)look for a 250.These are a taller version of the 170/200,but with a small block(302/289/351w)bell pattern, which is different than yours. The stock frame stands will work,as well as the tranny crossmember, but you really need to replace engine/trans together as the smaller 200 type trans are pretty weak.250s are common in Mavericks,'70s Comets and pre'80 granadas. And with the v8 style bell, you have the freedom of several trannies you can use;c4,c6,AOD,toploader 4spd,t-5 5spd and even some aftermarket beefed trannies.
