Ford Edge It seems that the days of the big boxy SUV might be numbered (at least temporarily). In the meantime, consumers are flocking to vehicles with SUV functionality and sedanlike handling characteristics. Ford's first attempt to hop aboard the "crossover utility vehicle" (CUV) bandwagon came in the form of the lackluster Freestyle.

Post 3.5L Duratec Engine ticking noise

My new 2008 Ford Edge, emits a ticking sound from under the hood. It really never goes away, yet the vehicle runs perfect. Has anyone else had or notice this noise with the 3.5L Duratec Engine?

Thanks Bob

Such a great thing when a new car comes with a warrantee...

Seriously though, have the dealer do the first look, if they find nothing (they usually find the problem) then come back.

I would say it could be anything... it's really hard to diagnose an engine sound through a forum. Try to post an audio clip or something, so we can try help you out.

Noises, Vibrations & Harshness.

Every car has it's unique sounds. You maybe comparing this car to other cars you have owned. I would bet it's totally normal. My 2006 Toyota Tacoma ticks like crazy.

Have them check it out at the stealership.

Does the ticking sound increase/decrease with engine speed?

Bob,

I have the same issue with my 2008 Ford Taurus. The ticking noise is very loud at idle when the engine is cold. The noise is not that noticeable once the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Sounds like a lifter but, my Ford dealer says it's normal in that engine. Ford is aware of this complaint. I have actually heard the same noise from several Ford cars with the 3.5L Duratec Engine. Let me know if you find anything. I have looked hard on-line and have not gotten any good information on this issue.

Interesting footnote.

That engine does not have lifters, certainly not in the traditional sense of the term. And they are not hydraulically adjustable.

It has a "valve lash cap" on each valve. Each cap is a specific thickness as required by that valve.

This is a judgment call, but you should be the judge ! Take it back again. If they try and blow you off ask for an appointment to be set up with the Ford Motor Company district representative to discuss the problem, face to face.

At a minimum, I would hope they would at least check the valve lash clearance, but this is probably a 2 or 3 hour job.

Have a 2008 edge Limited, 3.5L with ticking sound under the hood, the dealer keeps telling me they don’t hear it. Transmission failed to work at 4,400 miles, would not move while in gear. Dealer claimed to fix the matter after five days at dealer. Last week the vehicle was at dealer for 5 more days, and returned (with no repairs) as they still think the car is fine, yesterday the transmission failed again now 4,900 miles. Between 1800 and 2000 rpm there is a vibration from under the hood. Had 2006 freestyle, not a single issue with it, the edge is a sweet car, but when it will not move in gear it sucks.

I have a ticking noice in my Ford Edge, but it seems to be coming from the rear of the vehicle. I just ignored it since it is a lease and I will be trading it in come December. Not sure if the wife is going to get another Edge or something else. Will just have to see what deals are around at the time of our trade-in.

possible just injection, injectors are noisy and do seem to get worse as they get older and hotter. Nothing you can really do about it and it doesn't affect performance
