Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default New car bugs

I just got a 2008 Limited Escape and now miss my 98 Ranger! I have been having some difficulties and maybe its new car bugs or ? The liftglass leaked and sometimes I have to slam hard to close and get the door ajar light to go off, the overhead storage (sunglass holder?) rattles when empty (or whenever), the satelite radio cuts out (my friend heard it and said his never cut out that way, but he has a Honda), the dash lights dim and brighten without regard to outside light/dark and acceleration is very sluggish. I took it in to the dealership with all complaints and had the oil changed. Still very sluggish, dash lights still dimming and brightening intermittingly, overhead storage still rattles, liftglass is fixed and satelite radio works better so maybe I'm too picky about the other stuff. Anyone else having these problems in the 2008? PS I am still getting the oil change due 5% message even after the oil change. Do I need change something or did the dealership forget to update it? Thanks for any help!

If I do remember correctly, the manual says that whatever intervention you're doing to the car that has to do with the message center, it takes some kilometers (or miles) driven in order for the computer to 'understand' them and apply changes in its messages. Sounds stupid to me but this is what it says in the manual. I don't really know if it applies to oil changes but you might want to ask the dealership alright.

The liftgate thing seems to be a major bug, indeed. Mine has it and a lot of people are writing on the forum(s) about it. To me, it happens when a) all other doors are properly closed and b) the heater fan is on. I figured out that there is a buildup of pressure in the car that eventually prevents the door from closing properly. What I do is rattle it every time to check it's properly closed. If it's not, I am opening any door, close the liftgate then close that door too. I will take the car tomorrow to the dealership to have a mirror fixed (cracked due to extreme temperatures, -36 Celsius) and I will address this too. If they can fix it I'll write here.

I don't really know what you mean by 'sluggish' in terms of acceleration. I am not a speed guy myself, so the pace this car has is quite fine for me. I am very aware that it's neither a Porsche Cayenne nor a Grand Am, but just a cheap CUV. So I don't expect it to make it from 0 to 100 km/h in 8 seconds. In this regard it behaves normally. Now if you have someone which does 70 km/h on the highway and you want to pass them but the car won't let you, that IS definitely an issue and has to be corrected. Keep in mind though that you really need to put the hammer down to have the Duratec deliver its full power. In other words, the 200 horsepower that they advertise won't show up until you hit 6000 RPM on your tacho. That's what I've read about the 3.0 liters engine, I don't know about the smaller one.

I've done a test drive yesterday in some very extreme conditions. I'll put a short story on this forum (and a couple other Ford forums too) about it as soon as possible. What I want to say though is that, on icy and snowy roads (no sudden accelerations) it behaved absolutely ok, and it stays around 2000 RPM at 100 - 105 km/h, which should give a very decent mileage and very low engine noise. The Contitracs are noisier than the engine itself if you ask me (haven't changed them yet). I cannot test the acceleration too much, all our roads are covered in hardened or frozen snow right now and they will stay like this at least until next month.

On a side note, being sluggish might have to do with the intelligent system the car uses. This model is known to have a history of capsizing (rollover) and even the user manual and the sun screen sticker warn you about this risk in case of sudden maneuvers. Perhaps it's this limitation that prevents you from doing this and that with the car. Remember that the safety canopy, the side airbags and the stabilizer front bar are the very attempts to solve or soften this particular issue (anyone can correct me if I'm wrong but I remember about a class action suit against Ford for the early Escape models rolling over a couple of years ago).

Thanks for the response! Sorry I wasnt clear about the sluggish issue! Heres what I have experienced: I was traveling 35mph and a car pulled out in front of me, I applied brakes (not a complete stop or screeching halt but a good brake) I then applied gas and it took its time in response. Almost like a sputter or cutting out. Also driving on freeway I am experiencing this in heavy traffic so I am not driving fast or doing quick maneuvers. I never experienced this in my 98 Ranger and I think it had the same or similar engine. I knew I was getting a cheaper SUV but I think I expected similar driving between the Ranger & Escape. Thanks again for your input.

This is very true. Lots of road noise off these tires. My daughter has 08 escape also. She has Michelins and they're much quieter

Just purchased an 08 Escape and have been very disappointed with its acceleration. I've noticed, however, that I think most of the problem is the overdrive. It takes my Escape awhile to get out of overdrive, unless I stomp on the accelerator. The 08 version has an O/D on/off button. Whenever I want to accelerate while driving on the highway, I turn off the O/D and it accelerates a lot better. I do not know if earlier versions have this button though...

There are three buttons on your dash, one will reset your oil change

Check your owners manual on how to reset the oil life, some can be pretty tricky.

Cool Door Ajar light - 2005 Escape XLT

I just bought a 2005 Escape XLT, and low and behold, this am, the "Driver's Side Door Ajar" Light came on; and trust me, the door - nor any other door, is ajar.....think I've just been reminded why I've stayed away from a Ford product......can someone renew my faith in my recent purchase - please. Are there any other "bugs" I can expect to come out of the woodwork on this vehicle..
