Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Replace your DPFE sensor (Delta Pressure Feedback Sensor) it's part of your recirculation emission system, they are known to have a high failure rate on the escape, i would replace that and that should drastically if your gas mileage still does not increase i would run a fuel system cleaner, i recommend the AMSOIL P.I. Performance Improver, my gas mileage went from 18 to 24.

The DPFE sensor you suggest being bad, could it also cause intermittent bad gas milage?
Most of the time I get 21 mpg and once in a while out of the blue I get 12-13.

+1 on the AMSOIL injector cleaner.

I have the 08 with 4X4 and never get under 20mpg even in town...

Yeah possibly you also have to keep in mind that your driving habits, wind direction, speed, tire pressure, ambient temperature all of these and more are common denominators for poor gas mileage. Try a bottle of AMSOIL Performance Improver and see if it fixes your problem. Before you run out and get your DPFE replaced, a 6 dollar fix is better than a 60 dollar fix.
