Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default 2005 escape 4wd

Need help please. I searched and couldnt find the info i was looking for. I just bought my fiance a 2005 ford escape xlt with the v6 and i cant find a switch to engage the 4wd anywere. I dont have a owners manual or i would have looked in there. Is it just a automatic 4wd that engages when tire slip is detected or what? TIA

Yes its completely automatic and works very well. My last suv had several buttons to press and I was a bit worrysome of this Ford Automatic but I will tell you its works just great. One less thing to have to do. I have an 06 4wd v6.

I have a 2005 xlt V6 AWD. It is a fully automatic system. Its a good system as long as you don't intend to use it as a serious off road vehicle.

awesome thanks for the help. dont plan on doing anything serious with it but maybe a run through a field every now and then. so i take it if the front wheels start spinning it will engage the back wheels?

The 4WD is more of an AWD system. It uses a viscous coupling transfer case borrowed from Volvo to keep power to all wheels, at all times. It operates smoothly in the background all the time helping you stay in control in all conditions. I believe 7% [dont quote me on this number] diference in speed is allowed between your front wheels and back wheels. I use it in all types of weather and roads (or lack there of). I have only gotten stuck one time, trying to pull a 2500lb boat out of the water on a sand beach! As i said, the AWD is borrowed from Volvo. I was worried about not having a manual lockup mode, now i think its just as good without.
